What sort of labour cost should I expect for a head gasket, water pump and timing belt change, roughly?

123 will be going in to have the work done this month, but I'd like to prepare myself mentally and anally before my pants are pulled from my waist.

I would expect about £400.

Lowest quote I had was about £700/800 for my valver for the whole lot. My local garage (who are good) quoted about £1400 tops.

id say find a friend you can trust to do it, otherwise you will pay a bomb

slightly (well very) off topic, do you play on Wii on Call of Duty online smoky??? as i kept getting killed by a smoky mcpot on there a few weeks ago?

Nah, thats not me, its a plastic Smokey. :D

I'm resigned to paying for the labour, I dont know anyone that is mechanically minded enough to help with the work near to me.

Gonna ring renault, and then my local garage and see what the difference is and play them off if i can. Its quite unlikely it'll actually go to Renault, though.

at least 800 for the lot i'd guess, thats just labour done at hourly rate as quoted by the book times for the work. renault will be a lot more i would of thought

You could always offer to pay someone on here mate, even if you have to drive a good distance to them it would be worth it, or even if they could help you do it yourself? (Not putting myself forward btw I'm useless lol just a lot of good mechanically minded people on this forum!)

Give portformance a ring on 07767787097 for a price mate

Portformance are in Warrington, which is about 200 miles away. I'd definately need the work doing before I made that kind of journey :)

I thought about asking the forum, but I'm a little reluctant, firstly because I dont want to put people out, particularly those I dont really know and secondly; if something were to go wrong I would have a means of recourse with a garage. Its different when you're relying on other peoples generousity.

Is Nick Hill nearer to you? I think he charges reasonable rates and knows his stuff

He's Lincoln aint he? Thats not tooooo far.

I'd still need an MOT on the car before I could move it that way.

Where are you based?

I'd lend a hand if you're not too far from the midlands.

I take burger king as payment

I can't see it being that much.

I had my cambelt and a full service on the 172 for £660.

Have a word with Birchdown on CS as that's who I take my car to.

Always has good reviews.

We can do both MOT and the work if you don't mind travelling to Retford. Both myself and my biz partner have got clio williams and have had 16v as well so are well up on the engine repairs on these cars, and all work is guaranteed www.ST-performance.co.uk.

We can do the pump, timing belt and head gasket for (including head skim)£653 inc vat and £550 cash (ssshhhhh). Of course the belt, gasket set and pump are extra. If anything, at least you know what you should be paying! :)

That sounds more like the kind of money I'd expect to pay, quotes of £1400 for this work is ridiculous! I got my cylinder head rebuilt, new gasket, cambelt and waterpump done cheaper than that!

As Jamie says, Birchdown also have a very good rep, they are near to chester if that's not too far?

Is Nick Hill even working anymore? I know he failed to do some work to one of my mates car and had to give the money back.

Not sure mate, has anyone on here been in touch with Nick recently?

Thank you all for the offers. I have elected to take it to my local shop. The guys are good there and have always treated me and my car well.

I have elected not to go through with the head gasket change, everything is fine with it, it would be unncessary and expensive. Instead I will just have the timing belts, rocker gasket and water pump changed.

Don't fix if it aint broken.

Sometimes you run into alot more problems if you do as it unearths Gremlins.
