Have they actually done the work to a level the car actually works and hasn't broken down? If so, consider yourself lucky. I never go to garages now except for the MOT and even then I wont let them touch it.

Been thinking about getting a full rebuild of mine but not looked into it fully yet.

buy a spare willy lump for 300quid and do it yourself mate, sell on the old engine.

that way cars never off the road, and theres no chance of a **** up on someones elses part causing you lots of grief and expense.

i never let anyone touch my car, never have done due to all the horror stories and the fact its heavily modified, and i have had no mechanical training, so anyone can learn easily enough

What about the serials on the engine? Won't the motor lose value doing that?

Easy enough to learn on then do you rekon? I just wanna make sure its worth it really - nice to know the engine is 'as new' again really.

re serial depends how much of a purist u are for total originality

think std engine rebuilds r only worth doin if its showing serious signs of problems, heavy oil consumption, or a serious death rattle these types of issues would indicate serious engine probs, the F7R lump seems a pretty decent unit mine has covered 127.5k and has a healthy compression consumes next to no oil and performance is on a par with what they were like when new good basic maintenance is the key to reliability.

most places that say they can do this and that are expert bullshitters first and foremost. I'll only take my car to Andy Cutler and no one else, in fact only 4 people have ever been allowed to touch it, Andy, Danny (sideways dan), Mark (ex GDI) and Darren.

I spent some money back in the day with some cowboy outfit and by some miracle he's still getting people through his door paying large sums of money for work which is never started let alone finished. It's a sad state of affairs, but the industry is rife with chancers :(

errrrrr..thanks for mentioning the fact i kept that car on the road for you for years .........yeah.really......ta.

I hear Hill Power do a good job on engine rebuilds for the F7R. I believe they used to work on the old Clio racers back in the day...

My local garage in Runcorn are very good, have used them for years since my first car, always do a good job and don't bull shit. They rebuilt my cylinder head a few years back after a cambelt failure, and did an excellent job, wouldn't take it anywhere else tbh. Although they don't do tuning work so if I wanted this done I'd prob take it to Hillpower as they have done work on my car in the past (original owner) and Nick has a very good rep.

all the work i had done cost me just under 2500 they finished the engine the first time got the engine sent back my self and my dad put the engine back in and got it spick and span ready to fire up it looked really good but after 10 mins on starting it up, it made the worse noise iv ever heard and on finding the problem, it was due to the timing tensioner not been put on properly, they even put a 'new kit on it aswell' luckerly it was only ticking over and bent 8 valves but enough to piss u off since u waited 4 months for the day you fire her up again. so sent it bak for re valving took a further month to get the engine bak off them. when sending it off to the company they promised a full brand new set of gaskets and a timing kit and that they would fit the engine bak in with all these extras with NO extra cost. but none of these promises were kept and i had to pay a further £100 from renault for a timing kit and £100 from renault for the gaskets and when everything seemed to working good i was in to 400 miles of the run-in mileage and the bottom end went which was the reason why i had all this work done in the first place im now taking leal action and the car is in renaults hands now for a full recon and making sure its the ****ing shit this time, i bought this car in December and only been able to drive it for 20 days since to date sux or wot

They are not that hard to work on, Ive rebuilt engines over the years, and i just farm out the difficult bits like ,boring/honing valve guide inserts ,an crank regrinds, and head work if required.the rest is just meticulous assembly which gives me great satisfaction.

I'm no mechanic but even I can fix an F7R. Must have been drunk YTS teenagers working on the car to be that messed up.

I'd be mad too. Personally I wouldn't go to Renault, but back in the day when I had my R5 Raider I got them to do all my work and it was top notch. One of the mechanics there loved the car, he took special care over it. He bought it off me in the end...

Nowadays if I had to get work done I'd only go to specialists named on here.

On the button. Took my 16v to Renault when I got it, to get them to do the cambelt, thinking it was the best place. Came back leaking oil everywhere and they tried fobbing me off claiming this and that. Cant remember what they did as it was 5 years ago now. Overtightened something on a seal.

The when they finally agreed to correct the massive oil leakage they cracked the sump, so ended up fitting me a new one FOC.

Thats my experience. And the belt was around £500 to do but they didnt do a proper job. Never again!

Preston Sunwin for information.

Damn newbies. They didn't need to mess with the camseals at all for a cambelt change unless they had the followers off to do something else...
