View Full Version : Quaife non-pas quick racks

Im trying to organise a potential buy of custom made Quaife non-pas quick racks for those who want to run the non-pas set-up whilst not missing out on the lower lock-to-lock ratio that the Valver/williams pas rack has.

I have contacted Quaife and they are able to provide us with the internals we would require.

I'm not sure what sort of ratio people are after, but that can be decided if enough people commit to the buy.

The order needs to be a minimum of 10 racks.

The price is going to be around 125 for the bits (not including postage), although this may change depending on the design we go for.

25% would be required as a deposit and the racks would take 12-16 weeks to make.

Some details from my contact at Quaife as follows:

His responses are in bold

- What exactly will you provide? Will it be the whole steering rack set-up (including inner arms, track rod ends etc.) or just the internal parts that will convert the rack I have to quick? It would be just internals the pinion and the rack.
- What sort of ratios will you be able to provide i.e. lock-to-lock turns? it depends on what can be achieved in the design of the rack housing and what you would want normally 2.5 - 2.9 but we have tried this sort of conversion on a number of racks and the basic design of the housing means a conversion cannot be done, which is why we need to see a sample to evaluate.
- This may be me misunderstanding your response, but will you actually design the components that will make up the rack?
Yes we will take the sample you supply and draw up a new internal rack and pinion to suit. IT WILL NOT BE A COMPLETE RACK ONLY INTERNALS.
Hope that helps Len

So to get this going you will need the non-pas column from a lower spec clio and a non-pas rack from a lower spec clio to fit the 'quick' internals into.

To be honest, i'm not expecting to get enough interest for this to go ahead, but I might as well give it a go and see how things pan out...

So add your name to the list if your keen and we'll see how things go.

Cheers

Theres nothing wrong with doing as you have said, but i'm interested in getting a proper non-pas set-up for my valver rally car build and so thought it would be worth a shot gauging interest......

can i just clear something up?

quaife want to see the design of the rack before they can confirm what ratio can be achieved? is that right?

yeah it also says due to the design of most racks its not possible to make.

think they should see a rack before we get our hopes up

Speed is correct, I will be getting a manual rack next week and hopefully sending it off to Quaife immediately to see if the quick rack will be doable....

i'll have one if its do-able and the ratio is 2.5 turns or less lock to lock. dont fancy a 2.9 as tehe williams is 2.75iirc

Without wishing to take this thread off topic, I am skiiiint and can't afford a custom rack for the foreseeable future :( and have a small leak on the current one.

Is the pikey conversions simply a case of removing all the connecting pipes and the pump and the reservoir, filling the rack with fluid then welding the holes closed??

well, as MOT rules go it should FAIL an MOT using a PAS rack which is unoperational

Bit of an update, received my non-pas bits down today (rack, column & alt brackets).

Will be sending the rack out to Quaife on Monday/Tuesday - so should be getting some more info once they've done their testing etc.

Not sure how long this will take but i'll ask my contact and update on here.

Cheers

If it helps at all I have recently bought a manual rack which was converted to a quick rack a few years ago and it's just under 2.5 turns lock to lock so it can definately be done.

Don't get too excited yet, it's looking increasingly likely that we will loose Excudo and Cliokongen from the buy because they need lhd racks which are not compatible (to confirm) with rhd racks..... :(

surely its worth asking quaife if they can simply invert the necessary components to make it fit a LHD rack, if they are fabricating the lot from scratch it must be dooable within the group buy?

Response from Quaife today:

Rack is now stripped and inspected Daniel, there are a couple of issues and we cannot confirm that we will be able to do 2.5 lock to lock without putting it into CAD and do the calculations The price we can offer the rack at is 225 each for an order of 10 and 138 each for an order of 30 both prices are plus vat and include all design work. If that is of interest please get back to me and I can set out delivery times and conditions.

I was thinking about this the other day, could potentially try Sadev as I know they make quick racks, only problem is I don't have a non-pas rack to send them as mine is with Quaife.

Any other ideas for other companies we could try?

People's opinions?

The price differential between 10 off and 30 off doesnt make sense to me at all.

With 10 off it should be 138, why is this so much more expensive than all there other rack and pinion sets..?

I believe that you can get a Non pas Nova quick rack (there about 150 quid i think) that only needs one bracket modding to fit the Clio. Heard someone that has done this and it been fine.

Just head back from Sadev but they are quoting roughly 1,000 per rack and pinion

No chance of a price reduction with Quaife so we are either going to have to go for 10 racks at 225 or 30 at 138.

Am also awaiting response from another company.

Get hanggling and get a better deal on the Quaife kit. All there other stuff is so cheap, turning down business is crazy....

I would pay 150-175 quid for a 2.5 rack what about everyone else ?

May as well just buy a new valver PAS rack for 160 from GSF and blank it off....... 2.8 rack and all new kit

Originally Quaife said roughly around 125 per rack for an order of 10, the fact that this has gone up to 225, which doesn't include VAT, has put a lot of people off, and it also seems pretty contradictory when you can buy a nova quick rack for 100.....

I have talked and talked with Quaife but they are not willing to move on price and a price for 15 isn't going to really make that much difference.

Not sure on the interchangability of PAS racks with non-PAS racks.....
