What is the minimum I would have to take off to adjust the tension on the cambelt?

dont adjust it at all mate, when fitted it is tensioned to where the tensioner is set, but once used there is more strain put on the belt as it starts spinning so therefore tensioned a lil bit more so slacking the belt off just a bit can cause the belt to slip or snap .

Upper cambelt cover. Lower crank pulley cover. Lower belt cover and pass side engine mount should be adequate for you to get some small hands in there.

Rhys , i think hes having doubts about the tension it was set to in the first palce, hence the need to re adjust it :)

Yeah, it was changed 2 weeks ago and it sounds like this, although not as loud.

Of course you can, you can slacken a belt off if it's too tight no problem.

I've posted on C16V with details mate.

easy to do, as said remove engine mount and covers, and use the proper tensioning bolt that goes into the back of the head, m8 iirc? saves trying to counter hold anything when doing up the tensioner

M6 long threaded bolt from halfords is perfect.

YEP ,can be done............mine sounded just like that on my F3P turbo.had a word with lads up at garage.......screw bolt in on upper tensioner slacken tensioner adjuster...then undo bolt by 2 flats on bolt, tighten tensioner, start up and see if noise diminishes.

This is on an 8v overhead cam but 16v is same.

Did you change your water pump? as well. New belt will pull harder on bearing.

I didn't have the water pump changed, just the tensioner. ]

This is a pic from when I had it changed, can someone draw on where the hole is for the bolt please? Just so I know what I am doing before I start it.

Just behind it? My dad has a big bucket of bolts, I'm sure I will find something that will fit.

in the lower picture , there is a tread from the left on the tensioner,so it meet the tensioner..

Look at the thick piece of metal just behind the tensioner. If you look at that from behind you'll see a small threaded hole, this is where you need to thread the bolt through

About where the brake reservoir is but on the head. Remember to support the engine on the sump when taking the mount off unless engine isn't in car ofc :)

Managed it with just the top cover off, and 3 of the 4 middle cover bolts off.

There was already a bolt in the hole so I didn't have to search for one, now I have loosened it off there is no whining noise - very happy.

Cheers for the help guys.
