Sometimes when I back off the gas and the engine is on over-run, something in the drivetrain makes a rattly humming noise, particularly at higher speeds like when you come off a motorway exit. As soon as your back on the gas it disappears. The gearbox was reconned not long ago too. Any pointers on what it could be?

Doesnt sound like the actual engine, more transmission.

Check bolts on housing and heat shield on the exhaust. Could be a bearing I guess...

Is it a loud higher pitched clanging, or low pitch?

May be worth taking a few bits off like airbox, battery and wheel and having a thorough poke about...

if the noise is coming from passener footwell area then its more than likely the box mate, mines done it again on me, input shaft wears its bearings and rattles about until box dies

get on the blower to whoever rebuilt it
