Got myself a renaultsport idler pulley to get rid of the power steering, came to fit it to my engine & I can't work out how it's supposed to fit :?

From what I can see, it will bolt onto the block fine but only if I get rid of the big bracket that the tensioner pulley, PAS pump & alternator all bolt to, so what am I doing wrong? Have I got the wrong parts or do I need some other parts?

I just assumed that the RS pulley went in place of the PAS pump & it was job done and use the standard belt.

Has anyone with a cup car got any pics of how it's all supposed to go together?

nope you do away with the "big main bracket and tensioner gubbins".

Basically all you will need are the following 2 parts:

alternator adjuster, has a sliding mech, and the top bracket that the alternator pivots on.

You do away with PS, idler, tensioner. and are just left with the alternator.

So basically the belt only goes around 3 pulleys (crank, water pump and alt).

i think paddy is on about the pully that replaces the ps pump so a std belt can be used? justin has one iirc

Correct.

So I'll need the 2 bracket things for the alternator then? Where from & how much :?:

iirc no you dont use the brackets as you have the idler pully,

I think I do need the brackets as there's nothing to bolt the alternator to as I'll be binning the big bracket that the PAS pump, alternator & tensioner are attached to

if you do that you dont need the pulley. the pulley swaps places with the ps pump, everything else stays, like justins pic

summeh

why would you want to spend extra money on an idler pulley that replaces the ps pump when you can just use the brackets as indicated, and a shorter belt?

The end result will be a few weight kg saving, and best of all an engine bay with a lot more room in it, so filter changes are a doddle.

The brackets in the pic above can be had from a scrap yard for 20quid max. I got mine for just a few quid from a scrap yard, but it does depend where you go and which way the wind is blowing.

ok sorry fella I got confused. Aye what you have is a different solution. The one I offered in my opinion is a better solution.

oh and further more... the one I suggested is the cup racer way. At least it was on mine, and in my cup manual.

Have you got a pic from the manual?

What I've got is completely different to the pic of justins engine :?

No they dont. The cup racers had an idler that was the same shape and fitment as the original PAS pump and was a direct replacement. No other modifications needed.

The rally cars that ran the pumps from the cam belt ran the set up as posted by summeh.

Ok, I'll rephrase it: the cups ive worked on have the same set-up as Summeh has pictured.

I think it may have varied depending on the year. The cup I had, had the brackets as I have shown. I am fairly sure the manual specified it this way and listed the part numbers as well... but I can't be 100% sure as I don't have the cup manual anymore. Btw this was a 1992 cup and cup manual.

Stan, I'll take the brackets etc

Isnt the manual brackets your selling now, the ones i took off, sold to laine, and then he gave to you?

stan
06-07-2009, 22:22
No.

Ive got several sets kicking about. Laine only gave me a set as I had "lent" him a set when we were working on his car...

Dave Peach
06-07-2009, 23:06
Is this the set from tha car that had the heavy frontal impact then?

stan
06-07-2009, 23:23
No, those were the ones I straightened out, then melted down, then molded into that "grpA engine mount" I sent you the other day.

I'd double check it if I were you...
