Got bored trying to find one so I thought I would make one. After all how hard can it be? Very very is the answer.

Story in pictures

1. The stone chipped original sanded primed and painted Audi silver then cleared (spray can left over from making a Audi R10 Le Mans Model)

2. Three coats of pva release agent and then mould release wax applied. Going well so far

http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b387/Lathafummi/CLIO/Carbon%20Grill/ClioCarbonGrill010.jpg

3. Trying to apply the gel coat and first layer of resin I noticed something wrong. The Halford paint had gone weired and reacted funny.

4. Sanded RIGHT back..

5. The mould coverd in fibre glass.

6. The original grill has been removed, just leaving the mould.

http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b387/Lathafummi/CLIO/Carbon%20Grill/ClioCarbonGrill025.jpg

7. Wet laying the carbon inside.

http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b387/Lathafummi/CLIO/Carbon%20Grill/ClioCarbonGrill029.jpg

8. The grill with the flash cut off. There are lots of bubble and bit wrong where i havent pushed the resin through.

http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b387/Lathafummi/CLIO/Carbon%20Grill/ClioCarbonGrill034.jpg

9. Test fit on the car. Really should have washed it the car before I took the pictures but wanted to see how it would look.

10. Another on car pic. Going to have to go back and make another mould now I know-ish what I did wrong. Going to have to mod the original grill so I can make a better mould.

My grandma has carpet just like that.

Not much goes right on the first go (especially with making moulds), but the idea is there and you got it damn near. Well done matey

Good isnt it :) I think it was my Gran's. My dad wouldt let her throw it away and covered the garage floor with it. After working on the car there it much nicer to work on so I copied him. You should see the horrible carpet covering my garage...

My grandma has carpet just like that.

We just ripped out carpet like that from our house a couple years ago when doing it up... that carpet is actually about £50 per square metre, i.e. very ****ing expensive!!! very durable and extremely hard wearing (lasts 30years+), its actually top quality... not like the £10 carpet you get nowadays. forget its name now...

its the kind of carpet that usually smells like that old person smell and piss. Cos they have got a smell without the piss. My gran gave me some sheepskin rugs before she died an they smelled of her for years. Burned them in the end.

Anywhos, how much does the carbon actuallly cost and do you use a special resin or anything?

I got about a 1m square for around £28  and some speical resin for about a £10 but there is a lot in there and i can be used to make the mould as well. Im not going to start adding the other bits up because it will stop me playing... Ignorance is bliss after all.

Other "core" materials used are;
Fiberglass sheet - two types
filler
catalyst
Gelcoat
PVC release agent
Mould release wax

plus all the silly little things like measuring cups, mixing sticks, etc etc

When i used to work with fibreglass i had to buff moulds with a air powered buffer and a compound, which made the mould shine and get its smooth finish back. Good for repairs to moulds.

Sounds kinda expensive but it is carbon fibre after all so cant really complain.

Work has been busy and has stopped play, so no chance to do any more work on the mould. I have mounted V1 properly to see what it looks like :)
