Basically this morning when i tried to drive off at the petrol station my clutch cable snapped.

I went down to renault and got a new cable and brought it back, called the AA.

AA man arrived and he looked at it and decided to fit a temporary cable because he said thew other 1 was a pain in the arse to replace. He ran a wire down the original sleeve and terminated it at both ends. But when i tried to engagae gears it wouldnt go in, felt like the clutch wasnt opening the clutch enough.

So then he shortened it and it felt a bit better, but was a bit on and off, still quite difficult to engage gears but possible, I heard the ratchet system clicka few times (taking up the slack?).

Anywya i have just driven from london to loughborough and it was on and off all the way, sometimes i couldnt enagage 1st gear from standstill at all unless i really rammed it in and revved the engage a bit, other times it would go in.

Once you get going you can change gears fine but you can tell the clutch isnt opening completely.

The AA man seemed to think there could be a problem with the clutch, but im startign to think the ratchet is at fault? Because i have just arrived here and it seems alot better then when i set off? Although it is on and off as i said!

Can anyone please shed some light on this as i may need to get this booked into a garage tomorow to sort it!

Thanks

With a new renault clutch cable and CORRECT routing of the clutch cable it should be fine...

my money is on the routing..

I had a very similar problem with mine after I replaced the cable but it turned out that my clutch was dead :?

its not rocket science really if the car is pulling in gears the clutch is fine .
i.e revs going in relation to road speed .

other than that most aa people have not got a fooking clue how
to fit a clutch cable as they are not specialised in certain cars etc .

hang on ,i read it properly now .
dont expect a proper clutch feel with a temporary cable
get the genuine cable fitted on there ,which is most likely the culprit .

Here's my take on these cables snapping.

Talked about many times before on this forum.

I had around 6 go on me in 5 years of the 16v. No matter what anyone says, if you have half a clue/common sense you cant get the routing wrong really.

I modified the cable at the bell housing end after a little advice from Summeh. I will post pictures tomorrow on what I did.

Surprise surprise, the cable hadnt snapped on me in over 12months. Otherwise, previously I was going through 1 every 6months, always carried a spare with me incase.

IMO, it all depends on if the clutch is fitted properly/type of clutch and whether you get a good one. simply because, after I had my new clutch fitted I had no end of problems with cables snapping, never previously.

Will post pics tomorrow...

Just get a genuine cable from renault & you wont have to do anything to it
