Can a 172 clutch release being be used on our Williams gearboxes?

It will fit, however comparing it to the williams unit there are two differences:

1) The 172 unit is thinner by about 5mm, i.e. the distance from the back where the fork rests, to the front (the contact surface for the clutch).

2) The plastic clips that hold the fork in seem to wide, i.e. they don't "slot" the fork in like the williams unit.

Has anyone ever tried using a 172 clutch release bearing?

I don't think #2 is an issue, but what effect would a thinner bearing give?

My old one rattles sometimes and I have a 172 one here. It may be I can just reposition it or re-grease it perhaps and it will solve it...
