Hi, Does anyone know of a document that exists which lists all the times a garage should take or charge for each specific job? My mate who is a mechanic for ford always tells me about jobs which takes him an hour but the garage charges twice or three times as much as per guide price in a book.

I just wondered if it is possible to get hold of a copy or is it top secret to the garage world? would just be nice sometimes to see if you are getting your pants pulled down on the price.

Thanks.

quoted times in the books and table mean nothing, a job to a specific garage takes as long as it takes depending on individual mechanics knowledge and ability to improvise/use of tricks to cut corners etc

basically anything written down will be a 'book' time and as such costly.the actual time taken will never be quoted and the garage will simply charge by the 'book' or close to it if they are feeling 'generous'

example, clio mk 1 heater matrix, 6 hour book time, actual time taken 40 minutes including tea break

Autodata gives you a lot of info. It's far from foolproof though. For example, book time on a 172/182 cambelt is 7.2 hours, so renault charge that every time. We've worked out it takes 4-5 hours so have done our fixed prices based on that. It's only specialists that do the same job over and over that can do that though really, as a 1 off i'm certain it would take a garage 7 hours to do.
