View Full Version : Hub nut issue, urgent

Ok, doing passenger driveshaft. there were two hub nuts here. First was easy, second was NOT tight. Problem is it's not coming off and is just spinning as I turn it. It's a Nyloc nut.

Any methods to remove requiring minimal cleverness and time? I need car!

Which nut??

Wobba
23-05-2009, 12:00
The main nut that secures the driveshaft to the stub axle.

should not turn unless the wheel is turning with it ,which
means you are school boy and forgot to crack it off with wheels
on the floor :D

If the nut turns with the wheels on the floor it means you have no splines left in the hub. :P

Yeah lol thats what confued me! ^^

Guess you mean the whole dis is turning?? Get someone to stand on the brake pedal?

Wobba
23-05-2009, 12:16
No.

The wheels are not turning. The shaft is not turning. It is locked in place.

The nut is spinning anti-clockwise, as if threaded.

I am replacing the driveshaft and CV etc. I need to get it done today. Obviously, with it spinning in place I cant take it off and re-use the stub axle.

wtf do you mean  the nut is THREADED of course .

Wobba
23-05-2009, 13:09
The nut, holding the driveshaft to the stub axle, is threaded. This means, it just spins, because some twat has ruined the thread on the end of the driveshaft.

If you are not sure what I am saying sckhal, just don't worry about it.

try getting a lever at the back off the nut and apply some pressure then while u do that try and undo the nut the pressure might allow the nut to pick up on some threads and undo hope ur sucessful and its just the nut that is bollocked :)

Wobba
23-05-2009, 13:39
Well, Im drillling now.

I did think of applying force from the rear but access is nil as the sleeve from the hub/stub axle is in the way. I can try and force the stub axle down the splines to give some pressure though.

2 nutS? ive never seen that before... I'm guessing whatever turd ****ed it up when they put it on put a second nut on to keep things tight then.

you could try pushing the driveshaft but you might as well just continue drilling. good job you have a replacement really.

Yea I think I have seen 2 nuts before but I think you're right: someone has bodged it in a previous life and stuck the second one on to secure it. Neither were tight.

Drilling is taking ages. It's a badass nut this one. Thing is I am shagging the thread on the end of the driveshaft, lucky I have a new one

Hope this post is too late, or you are still struggling. Jam nut tight with nail or similar. Use angle grinder and cutting disc to remove whole arc of nut. Ok if you don't need to worry about splines.

Its taking hours as my drill keeps running low of batteries and I've broken 3 drill bits and the other ones suck.

if the thread is stripped, get a socket the same diameter of the shaft thread..
then get a big hammer n whack it hard , then unscrew.
do this over n over again.

Ye, well things could be worse!

I got tired after 4 hours drilling and went in doors, left car in bits on the street overnight. Luckily the current traffic warden is a car nut that races Saab's, so he didn't care :)

I am almost there, then I can prise the damn nut off.

The shaft is ****ed. I can see on the inner part of the threads its totally stripped, and not from my drilling!

Looking at the condition of a couple of things I think people have been unable to do the wheel bearing, and it will need replacing soon (I have two already).

The new driveshaft I have will help too ^^

Off I go now. Will update progress later.

YAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY!

I got the bastard off!!! That was painful!

The shaft and nut were almost completely stripped of thread. No doubt another fine job by a 'reputable' garage

Not very good I know, but here are some piccies I took:

Now the gearbox gaitor bolt seems to be threaded...whoever put this back together after refurbing the gearbox is a MUPPET. Renault main dealer as well.

MatBrown
24-05-2009, 15:34
Those threads are common to go, due to over tightening, just need to get it helicoiled.

Mat.

summeh
24-05-2009, 15:37
be very careful with the tripod fixing to the gearbox, if one is threaded but still grips you can locktite it in (what i've done), but any worse than that and i think its recut time. might just be best to do that any way. remember its ally so you only want to be nipping it up. i think most people forget this, hence why the threads always get stripped.

Wobba
24-05-2009, 15:44
Yea, I'll get it helicoiled. For now I am using metal epoxy. It's setting as we type. Hopefully it will give the bolt something to bite into until I can get it sorted :(

summeh
24-05-2009, 15:50
cool, it only needs to be nipped up and its not really a stress point so it just has to seal that gator on. shud be fine.

Wobba
24-05-2009, 16:09
This is what I am hoping, I just want to be sure of a seal so fluid is not pissing all over the floor...will be yet more wasted money buying fluids and I'll miss the trackday too.

cliokiz
25-05-2009, 17:49
I managed to strip the thread out of my gearbox by being an idiot and doing it up too tight

Learnt my lesson there.

I just used a slightly longer bolt and it managed to grip some thread at the bottom.

Wobba
25-05-2009, 23:34
Well, a day later of some fun driving (judging by Summeh's green face when he got out) all seem's well!

The really good news is MY ANNOYING KNOCKING NOISES HAVE GONE!!!!!1111`! YEY!

Seems the outer N/S CV was shot, and I am sure the messed up bolt didn't help matters! Handles sweeeeeet now, just a minor adjustment to make and job done for trackday at Brands!
