View Full Version : Lower oil pressure after oil change.....?

Before going to the Nürburgring on Thursday i serviced the car yesterday.
- Gearbox oil
- Brake fluid
- Engine oil
- Oil filter (genuine Renault)
I normally use Elf Exellium 5W-40.
But yhis time i wanted to try something else.
After some research i opted for Motul 300V 5W-40.
As the two oils are the same viscosity i would think they would offer the same kind of pressure....
Engine sounds better - but it should using new oil.
But strangely the oil pressure gauge reads lower pressures now... :?
Any ideas what causes this?
Michael
think the genuine filters are now causing lower pressures as the particle filtration size has got smaller...

Very interesting!
The issuse described by Richardcard1974 is very close to what i have experienced after filter change.
I dont think (hope) the lower pressure should cause problems - but i like to see pressure rise with the revs.
Tbh no one would worry if we did not have that "random" oli pressure gauge!
Just need a part no. for the Champion filter.....

I have the part number at home, ill put it up here later when i get home from work.
Try a Mann filter, they seamed as good as Champion when I tested them.

Infact im glad i saw this im having spurious oil pressure problems, that amongst other things, happened right after i changed the oil filter for a renault one (although i always use renault anyway).
So ill change the filter and see what happens. I get the same thing, pressure doesnt really rise with revs.

Try a Mann filter, they seamed as good as Champion when I tested them.
But if the Renault ones are made by Mann - surely i will have the same issues?
Glad im not the only one experiencing these issues.....

Can't get one of those today.... Unfortunately....
But can get a Mann (Filtron - same thing) filter today.
The filters i have been looking at have "valve opening pressure" stated.
Is that a bypas valve that opens inside the filter if it gets clogged?
The stated pressure are very different from filter to filter.
The Mann filter is 1,3bar. (just for the curious tech geeks) :)
Michael
Oil pressure can change between different brands of oil even with same rating and with same renault oil filters. I think I usually see within 1 bar difference when I switch oil brands. But if the needle is not rising at all with revs, then there's probably something not right.

The valve pressure on the /2 is different from the /3.
1.3 and 1.1 bar i think.
this is a problem thats been occuring for years. reno changed the filter design.
as said above, diff makes of oil can also give diff pressure readings......just dont use castrol stuff, or mobil 1 u shud b fine.
doesnt the Filter Bypass valve opening cause unfiltered oil to circulate the engine?
yes...but if they have changed the particle filtration size smaller that would account for a lower pressure..
Yeh due to the build up of flow going into the filter,
I have a question,..........in a box at work ive got three oil pumps from 3 different engines...early 16v.....f7p,.........a f7p late one, and a f3p one.......now on first inspection they look all the same.........but they all have different markings at helical end and also at the oil induction end .......no i dont reckon they are cast marks either...any thoughts?
col
yeah..
the thing is like most manufactures they started with a 16v item and willy item and then the best pump a megane item.( it had a higher delivery). also they all had slightly different sumps so the oil pick up where different.
but now theres just one pump for all engines..even though i had to re-use the original pick up on mine as the new one size fits all megane item was to deep/long..
as they become older they make less parts..

The media is the most significant difference. W 75/2 has 14µ (nominal), W 75/3 has 10µ.
Nominal flow rates are both 15 I/min.
The by-pass valve OP of W 75/3 is 0.2bar lower at 1.3.

So the /2 (the old filter) has a 14 micron pore size and a release valve pressure of 1.5 bar
The /3 (new reneault filter) has a 10 micron pore size and a release valve pressure of 1.3 bar
thats what i posted..thats why the pressure drops..

You posted it? So you wrote to Mann too? Amazing.

This is really getting to me..... :x
Got hold of a differnet filter today - a Filtron item.
Changed filters - no difference!
Pressure will not go over 3 bars no matter how high i rev the engine.
Half a bar at idle - max 3 bars when driving.
Oil temp approximately 80 deg. C
Engine sounds as usual.
This is really annoying me as im going to the ring on thursday.
I just wanted that peace of mind everything was fine - thats why i changed the oil and filter. Wish i had'nt done that now!
Anyway - i have pressure... i'll take the chance... :?

I put a Champion F136 on today, and its absolutely transformed my oil pressure.
Before it would hold 2.2 bar flat out, now it holds 5.5bar.
This is with a racetech mechanical gauge too...........

or just the readings your seeing...odd though as the oil pressure and oil warning are before the filter..

Can you post up vids to prove this like laine please?
172 engine not a Williams engine. Would that make a difference as its completley different?

Yes the 172 has a different renault filter. Its a different part number. Well spotted Jamie.
Irrelevant post award to the numpty at the back.

will an F4 filter fit a F7 block?
both are f-series blocks with the exact same fitment of oil filter
and my old f7p used to do 6bar
so no name calling robby ;)

yes it does
so problem solved, just buy a 172 filter

No one on here likes 172 engines or filters. www.cliosport.net is what i recommend for you.
but won't these be following the same spec upgrade( :? ) as the other renault genuine filters too..
so problem solved, just buy a 172 filter
No one on here likes me, i recommend f7power.com ... oh no wait...

What are ou offering to this thread apart from trying to bait me and altering quotes?
Please stay ON TOPIC, (which is F7R oil pressure)
If you want to insult me do it via pm and keep the board clear of spam.
I've offered my experiences with various filters on various f-series engines.
you are the one name calling
you are the one who is baiting
and you are the only one who is going off topic
apology accepted

Update....
Car survided the Ring. :D
It did very well actually.
Porsches and other dedicated local Ringers really does not like to have a little french shopping trolley in their mirrors going through Breidsheid! :D
About the oil pressure.
I'm almost sure it's the pressure gauge sender.
Gauge works - filter changed - oli changed at Renault in Adenau at the Ring (Great service)
And car still runs!
A little video en route to the Ring!

Yep... Autobahn on my way to the Nürburgring. :D
Always great fun when its allowed and there's the space to do it!
Did 2096km averaging 10 km/l - i think that's pretty good.
Laps at the Ring included! (23,6 miles/gallon?????)
