Well after a couple of disappointing rallies (ill co-driver so retired and a suspected fuel pump failure which turned out to be wiring connections) we were back in action for the Lee Holland Memorial Rally. This event at Anglesey is Cliorod’s motorclub rally.

We were seeded 28 out of a good entry of nearly 80 car, a good quality field with some very nice cars.

The weekend started with a Wedding in the lake district on the Saturday and long journey home which I finally got to bed around midnight. Due to us not being able to scruitineer on the Saturday we had to be at the venue for 7.30 on the dot so it was a 4.30 start therefore not much sleep. The journey was uneventful and got there well within time, not a car on the road.

We got scruitineered put the slicks on pressures toques and fluid checks and were all ready to go.

We were aiming for a finish in this event and for the first 2 stages drove steady but clean stages. The car with the diff and new final drive is so much quicker now and we were right up there setting competitive times. First stage we were in the top 10.!

We decided that the pace we were setting was good enough and not to push more so to avoid any mistakes.

The next few stages saw the big boys get into there stride and we were down into 14th O/A. Stage 6 saw us stuck behind car 23 and EVO 7 popping and banging for a lap, at one point we were going to put a move on him up the inside into the hairpin but thought better of it and followed him up to the split.

The car was going well no issues in service just a pressures, torques and fluids and then a fluid top up myself (dehydrated from the beers the day before.!)

On stage 7 of 8 we were 12th O/A and its really close for a class and top 10 finish, seconds in it. We start the stage well but on the second loop we use the outfield section which is single track and get baulked by an Orange mini in fact he sort of let us through then changed his mind and we nearly crashed into him.!!!!! We finish the stage and im f’in and blinding and a go over and have a polite word.

We start the last stage 11th O/A and 3 seconds behind 10th and a class award. Keith is 10th in his Mk2 240bhp escort so were off, good clean stage and a certain Orange mini let us straight through.!! Nine seconds quicker than the previous identical stage. Unfortunately we only beat Keith by one second on the stage so it was 2 seconds off our first top 10 finish.

We were really happy with the result though it was our highest finish and the car ran faultless and no incidents. We even won the first Novice award to add to our silverware with the car. So all in all a great weekends fun and solid championship points.

Big thanks to Cliorod and the organizers for a fantastic rally with some really good and long !! stages.

Next event 3 sisters at Wigan this Sunday..!!!!!!

Brakes Alcons just need fitting, although current setup with Pagid blue works well but the Alcons for sure should be better.

Suspension - running old cup racer stuff, just need a refurb with new inserts or the Bilstein Cup dampers if i can get someone to give me a price on them..!!!

Engine - we are down on power about 50-70 to the top guys in our class so maybe bodies in future but to be fair it goes really well so not touching it till something goes wrong.

Gearbox - thats great with the new final drive and diff this has made the biggest difference to the car since i have had it.

Thats it really just having fun, it very easy to just spend spend spend then have reliability problems and then you stop enjoying it.!!

excellent write up Steve, sounds like a great event and congrats on the finish and commiserations on just being squeezed out the top ten by people with no rear view mirrors! lol

If you need an extra bit of poke I'd charge it instead of bodies too, easy power, same power curve with just more of everything available everywhere. Bodies will be expensive to get the 70bhp needed!

LOL with a supercharger we will be in the top class which we are over 100hp down..!!!

Bodies with a good 210hp and lots of torque and flat curve would be perfect for the car.

Come to 3 Sisters on Sunday if your about.

aah, yeah that might be a bridge to far! lol

what is the power/torque limit for the class, you can always run a bigger pulley ;) lol

I'm supposed to being going to Goyt Valley for a BBQ with some mates, but the fight is on Sat so I wont be up for it if I'm honest. What time you at the 3 Sisters, as I'll head over if it's around/just after lunch time.

Oh, keep forgetting you only work down the road from me too, I'm still working in Wilmslow, finishing at 1:30 today :)

there no limit it goes on engine size and induction type.

so 2000cc N/A rather than 2000cc forced induction..

aah okay, in that case I'd just buy Omex's demo engine, it's dyno'd over 240bhp and up for sale iirc. The spec is extremely high

With forced induction you have to apply a factor of 1.7 to the engine size, R5Turbos are in the top class..!!

Would certainly go well but will probabley snap shafts and gearbox in a hurry..!!

Next phase would be sell the pink car and geta Mk2 Cup racer with Bodies, if i decide the throw some more money at it. Enjoying this car though and there is still more to come.

They are from a Saxo S1600 (unused) but bolt staright on just need to get some ally bell made for the discs. Job for the summer.

so 2000cc N/A rather than 2000cc forced induction..

The MSA invoke a a "times 1.4 capacity increase "for any forced injection on any car    MSA regulations in K37 inform you of this.

Well done Steve, the new circuit is just superb and will suit the Clio.
A good result, when you consider the "ASTRA" ~~~ It is worth (or cost that to build) £100K !!!! It has a John Wilcox Opel Manta 400 engine   ,6 speed paddle shift sequential    ,Metro 6R4 brakes ~~ the list goes on    .
Most of the Escorts are 2400cc Duratecs with around 280/300bhp ~~ again sequential boxes and costing in excess of £40k !!!
Rodders.

Not yet but plenty of external footage.....gearbox is great 1st is used a lot (with a close ratio gearset 1st is too high and you would bog down in a lot of places), the 5.2 FD and LSD have been the biggest jump in performance since getting the car.

Could spend 4-5k on a sequential but for that money would just sell the car and get a Mk2 cup racer for the same investment.

Just enjoying it.

Yes you are correct its 1.4 my mistake. That Astra was a weapon for sure but we had him in the corners.

People throw some serious money at these cars.....thats half the fun competing aginst them.

Thanks again for a great event.

Who is Lee Holland?

cliorod
03-05-2009, 17:44
He was a young lad   about 14years old,He was mad keen on rallying ~~ and went out marshalling with his dad on night rallies in the late '80's    ,before the MSA banned "targa timing" :( :( :( .
His dad used to ride a motorbike and Lee was pillion.Unfortunately on one event, they had a fatal accident  :( ,His dad survived ~~~ just !! but unfortunately Lee succumbed to horrific injuries

His Mum & dad, gave us (Pendle District Motor Club) a fund in which to run a Memorial rally ~~ and that is what we do ~~I think it may have been the 13th/14th running of the event ~~ Always at Anglesey
I hope this answers your question.
