I've been in this position many a times in the past.

Persist and you will achieve.

Or, Per ardua ad alta..

"Through hard work, great things are achieved" as they say in latin

If you are getting worn out with the constant maintenance, just walk away and leave it for a bit. I know how you feel there, been on the brink of torching my car a few times too!

Come back after a bit of a break and time to think and before you know it you'll have it sorted, and onto the next job ;)

ive seen blue hylomar used on crank seals on older cars, but that was 20 years ago, dunno what they do these days, perhaps the casings had a slight mark put in it through levering old seals out

Blue holymer is still used, an very good.

Renalt have their own which is even better, ive no choice but to do mine as its leaked onto the clutch....... :(

use an RTV sealent and bytual stripes then a new oil seal...

if the inner seals are leaking badly then the o ring seal won't cope...

I'm talking about the little metal core plug looking thing which is hidden under the engine lifting eye. I put some oil resistant stuff around that just in case.

eventually you'll get to the stage I was with mine... great cars, most fun I've had with my pants on, but god do they test your patience!

in the end all it took was the top box mount to fail (again) and that was it for me... got the 172 and never looked back

on the subject of my williams though, how easy is it to remove the gearbox without the engine?

on the subject of my williams though, how easy is it to remove the gearbox without the engine?

subframe off which is fairly easy if the mounting bolts come off ok, then gearbox mount and box out etc

rob-legend
29-04-2009, 18:57
with the rear subframe bolts, are they a bastard to get out? a mate of mine said they have a clip like nut inside the chassis rail that if snaps makes them unable to get back in

richy
29-04-2009, 20:16
yes they do have a nut held by a metal cage, but if you get a small wire brush and some decent penetrating oil then the chances of them coming off ok doubles,

i did have 1 snap on my old williams but after popping the cage out i could get a spanner on the nut.

which answers the question I was going to ask about what kind of fun you have without your pants on

Stick with it Rob - Willys you either have love em or hate em phases. Surprisingly I tend to go through a hate phase when it tries to kill me!

rob-legend

you're right, it's just a hate phase that is the more common one

i've been thinking, i'm replacing my sump shortly, would it be possible to seal up that seal with the sump off?
