I've just replaced the tappets and cambelt in 217, but I think I have ****ed up the camshaft oil seals because after running the tappets in I have spotted two pools of oil on the floor under seal points...

I'm totally out of energy to sort this right away, but how are they sposed to sit? I cant see how they are much cop in sealing oil as they move so easily...

I've got to put my camshaft oil seals on soon, i thought it was pretty foolproof??

I'm going to put plenty of grease around the edge of the seal to help it seal against the head..

Can you do the seals without taking the cams out, and just the sprockets, the prising the old seals out and pressing in the new ones?

Are yours leaking? If so, how much?

No they aren't leaking, i'm in the middle of a full head rebuilt so i'm replacing all seals.

yea good move.

I am still theorising on whether you can just do the seals by taking the cam sprockets (pulleys) off and doing it that way. I really don't feel like taking the cam carriers off again..

RTV, ok, gotcha. They are the right seals.

Thanks for all the wisdom MAXIBOY, been very helpful this last week :D

Where can 'RTV' be picked up?

Is this what i'd need to use around the edges of my camshaft seals on my F7R head to make a nice seal?

Or can i just use some grease?

i always use a smidge on the outside of seals/core plugs etc just helps to make them fit and seal 100% imo..

I'll probably prise the cam cover off this weekend to have a quick look, but if it is not all over the place I am tempted to leave it. I can see no oil loss and there is no dripping or pools of oil any longer.

asked about this in my training centre today as when i put my engine back in it dripped a tad from the flywheel end crank seal......and he told me they can slightly reposition themselves and seal after the engine is running...........maybe your ok.....because mine is as dry as a bone now

Ahh! That's very interesting. I have been very diligent in observing for leaks since running the tappets in and there is absolutely nothing, and no drop in oil level in the engine. Granted, I have not given it that much welly yet, but I have done a couple of long journeys and it's bone dry now!

there are 2 different size cam seals for the F7R head.
25x40x7 and 25x42x7 (i think thats it) the size is written on your old one sometimes its on the inside of the seal newer seals have the size printed on the inside.

renault do have both listed
