View Full Version : CV joint

I get a slight clunking when doing low speed manouvers from drivers side. It could just be my coilovers or top mount as AVO's are always a bit iffy there. Other thing I am thinking is CV joint.

Is there a guide for doing these? Not removed a stub axle before. Guess I need too for a cv joint.

Is it easier replacing the driveshaft?

It's not causing a problem, but I like things perfect, so I will probably replace both and maybe do bearings at same time for good measure.

Where can I get CV joints or complete driveshafts from?

not sure if the shafts are renault only or sometimes from euro car parts iirc..

easy enough to do in most cases and as you i always just replace shafts

but you could just fit new joints to existing shaft easy enough mate.

only issues are tight hub nuts and passenger side shaft requiring gearbox drain down and drivers split/roll pin if fitted..

just unbolt hub nut shock bolts steering arm bottom ball joints remove hub and hang out the way..release inner joints[ three nuts passenger side ][ 5mm roll pin drivers side] and remove shafts.
joints are located by circlips and can be slide from shafts and replaced easy enough..

anything else just ask

Exceeeellent. I have heard you can do a part exchange with old drive shafts. If they come all built up with tripod bearing and CV joint I'm sorted. I hear the gaitor is a pain though lol.

yeah just get them on exchange mate, probably renault only tho mate with it being a williams i expect. i think mine were around 90 quid a side or maybe it was 45 a side, 90 all together, honestly cant remember!makes it a lot easier tho as you get complete unit good to go, no faffin about with gaiters or boots etc which as you rightly predict are a pain

Ahh great stuff! Thanks, I wasn't sur if they came with gaitors etc already in place. Will save a lot of time.

williams drive shaft are very rare as they are slightly longer than standard.
best option is to send your old shaft away for re-build.

cost is roughly £90

if the outer cv is worn...u would usually get a clicking noise when turning.
if the joints are really fecked it sounds like a machine gun.

worn top monts ...u will hear it only when goin on a bumpy road.

Like rob says, CVJ gives a nasty cracking noise, especially on lock with the outer, not like usual clunking/donking noises you hear. They are easy enough to do, they are usually held by a retaining ring which needs a sharp knock to get them off the drive shaft. Not done a clio one yet so might also be a circlip. Messy job but not difficult.

check the gaitors first , a ripped gaitor will let the grease out
causing the clunk ,if you can catch it early enough it can be saved
its as easy as fitting new gaitor and re-grease (its not easy :) )

if fooked ,you are in luck as the drivers side dont involve draining the
g/b and is much easier to do out of the car .

no need for a special guide either HAYNES tells everything about the repair

Can't you use R19 shafts??

Was going to say renault don't do the CV joint separate

I have just got off phone to my mate at ECP. They can have them made for me (takes 3 days) at a cost of £97 inc vat (exchange) each side.

That's my concern yeah.

I did point of very clearly that valver and willy shafts are different lengths.

I'd find the problem before buying anything.

I am going to investigate this weekend. Could be loose balljoint I guess or struts making noises...

check spring seating
torque up top-nut to correct value - i'm sure it is in haynes.
Then test again.

I remember someone getting a shaft from ECP for their williams off here before im sure, even though they specifically said it was williams etc they still received a valver one! Maybe best to find out what length the willy shaft (haha) is and tell ECP to be 100% sure.

I've got the new ones here. Labelled as Williams. Need to know lengths if anyone has them to hand...in joints preferably.

Wobba

doh indeed!

I think I can get it out pretty easily. Just I've run out of energy right now...

i have spare wheel bolts if you need them as i've stud converted! 8)

Wobba
16-05-2009, 19:28
Ahh haha thanks mate that was my last one too. I've managed to get the end of the sheared bolt out now and I've used a locking wheel nut (which I ditched as I am sick of them!) instead!

All fixed. Tomorrow I'll possibly do the other shaft/joint.

Pretty pissed off tbh as I really wanted to replace the bearings too but no one would do em/was open :(
