It started out with my starter motor going, so i changed it for a 1.8 16v 19 starter, no problem in changing it.
Then i went to crank it and it grated to death on the flywheel so i have tried two more starters with the same results, and it wore the teeth or the fly down (was kind of expecting it to) but i've now changed the flywheel twice.
Same results with different starters (it shags the starters to).

I've recently found out that its a willy lump f7r 700. Are the starters the same as a 1.8 16v?
Are the flywheels the same as a 1.8 16v?
Could the gearbox be a factor as the starter mounts to it?
I've cleaned the face on the fly and the face that it mounts to.

This is really annoying me and i'm running out of choices.
The car has been off the road for 4 months due to this problem.

Cheers for any help you can offer.

sounds like the starter is not disengaging for some reason .
are you sure your ignition switch is working properly ?

Well my last try today was just doing with the battery and jump leads.
I've ran the car with this problem and its run fine once its fired up so i'm going to say yes it disengages.

Williams starters are smaller bodied than the 16v ones.

Mat.

It kills off the starter motor after a while, when i'm about to head home, would be better if i was heading from home haha

what gearbox are you using ??

imo there might be an aligning problem since all those starters
can not be faulty .
i dont know may be you are missing a dowel or a washer somewhere
which pushes the starter into the flywheel .

or may be a wiring problem ,i.e : starter gets engaged without the
ignition on its own somehow :?

the fact a 1.8 16v starter doesnt fit properly will be the first cause of concern!

I'm running a JB3 box

number1

I bet the 1.8 Starter is on the pish causing the Teeth to be in constant engagement with the Flywheel

Justin..

wont matter, could be running a JB1 for all that it matters!

Wouldn't it be an issues when driving it? I'm sure its returning, its at first contact that it makes a noise (when it goes out to turn the fly and goes when the engine as started and i've let go of the key) the key turns back slightly fine.

Justin..

so, when the engine is running it fine?

fit a williams starter, as they Fit . 1.8's dont!

Well it does some how fit (not taking anything away from anyone) but i will get a willy starter and try it.
Can't see anyone changing the engine plate.

count the starter teeth...

should have ten....if it has nine can have a problem on some flywheels..

Flash Arghhh

9 teeth on all starters, 124 teeth on the fly. Think the orignal has 9 (counted four starters) i'll try a willy one.

well, its deffo an F7R bottom end, so no worry bout it being re'badged

you can see where the 1.8 ones have been rubbing on the block. this suprises me as when i went to put a 1.8 starter on my turbo it wasnt even close to fitting :?

another thing, when i put a starter on once without the rear bracket it used to make an odd noise when starting but a few people have never had the same problem

do you put all the bolts in? also you need a locating lug as the starter motor is probbably moving when cranking, this may also be why you can get a 1.8 starter on a 2.0 block as there's no locators for the starter so it just fits where it touches kinda thing!

in the picture of all the starters, the far left one looks like a williams one as it has the smaller casing to it

the newer black one is from renault, so that should be a 1.8 one (as i quoted the vin number).
all the botls are in (3 bolts) nice and tight.
I might get a starter from renault and quote the engine number.
Cheers for the help.
