Ey Up.
I'm looking to change my 5th Gear for a one thats a bit eco friendly (and wallet). I'm doing 3500rpm ish at 70mph on the motorway.
Not sure on my box but its stuck to a 1.8 valver.
Any had theres changed?
I'm in West Yorkshire.
Cheers,
Flash

better to swap the entire box to a diesel unit..

How does that affect performance etc?

How strong is the diesel unit?

JC5 Laguna box is a good option for a cruiser, but the ratio's of all gears are different.

I think I've asked this question before and you can't just swap one gear as it's a all-in-one gears shaft!

Not sure on the rpm at 70mph of each box but I agree that it would be nice to have a more relaxed top end lol

The Diesel box has longer ratios and will allow a lower rpm at a 70 mph cruise, dont expect it to pull like it currently does tho! my valver with diesel box used to pull 130 plus in 4th, then change into 5th and it would almost slow down! fine below a ton tho
mine was 70mph at 2500 from memory.. top speed potential at 7000 rpm was 170....

LOL

You'd need silly power to get to 170mph

I thought 5th was separate from the rest of the gears... i.e. it could be swapped

yes could be but iirc there not very different between boxes and its the diff ratio that makes the most difference

it would make a reasonable difference

standard 5th is 31/39 and by swapping to a 31/42, you lower the revs @ 70mph from ~3300 to ~3060

the 31/42 gear is found in jc5 004, 016, 017, 022, 033, 045 and 067

So can you actually swap just the 5th gear?

I'm 99% sure that someone said before that you can't!

yeah i thought 300 revs was not that reasonable really...

Has anyone got an answer about swapping 5th or is it a new box job?
Cheers

yes you can swap 5th gear only, not the hole box...
you can find longer 5th gears here

I swear someone said you couldn't! lol

Thanks for the link though, that will be good to use if getting the box rebuilt and wanting a taller gear for cruising :)
