Hi, I'm the proud owner of Williams 1 no.41 - been looking at this forum for ages and now finally joined in properly!

The original JC5 box went all rumbly last year so had it replaced with another JC5 box (milage unknown) from a Renault scrappy...only that one's gone pearshaped now too :-(

So I'd like to get the original box rebuilt properly but am being quoted £700 from my nearest gearbox specialist! :-o They say this is because its an unusual box and they'd have to send it somewhere else to be done...

Yet, Im sure I've seen folks mention around £350 for a rebuild before.

I'd rather stick with the JC5 box than fit a weaker JC3 unit though.

Any suggestions on where I can get a decent rebuild done without re-mortgaging the house?!!

Cheers, Glyn

This fella has been a godsend to me,  I am taking all sorts of boxes for him to repair /overhaul   .
Recently he has repaired a Ford "Cossie" type 9,a Honda S200 for various people for there roadcars/kitcars.
I have taken a mate over who is doing the Peugeot 205 Rally challenge,to have his gearbox checked over before the season starts.
He will certainly be doing my Rally car box and my mates   as /when required.
His unit is just up the M6 from Crewe,at a place called Whittingham ~~ give him a ring, ask for Keith and tell him Rod recommends etc etc.
I hope this helps.

I think your guy is fobbing you off

JC5 boxes aren't rare or unusual, they're on laguna's, megane's and ph1 1 7 2's to name but a few

Just like to say thanks guys for the tips here, its much appreciated and the light at the end of the tunnel has now been switched back on -

K&N cahrge £450+vat parts and labour for a full rebuild and Bernie at Gearboxman £185+vat for labour and up to a max of £200+vat for the parts.

So cheaper than the £700 I was quoted to start with! :-)
