View Full Version : What do I get?

What do I replace the willy with? :?

Just for the hell of it and as the missus likes them I jumped in a 182 today for a test drive.

Didn't push a single button, it also felt horribly slow and general speeds, granted I didn't have the chance to properly to give it some but still!

I'm in a pickle now - I thought I'd like it and start as a basis from there..

I also think they're still overpriced - some of the ones I've seen 172/182 for £4,500 (roughly the initial budget) had 70k+ mileage on them and were chipped, scratched and dented.

So what can I get thats newer than the willy thats missus friendly but has the fun factor AND at least as quick as a willy is?

teggy type r, ive test drove a few 182s and theyve been shite nice for everyday but couldnt see myself getting any enjoyment out of one like i have the hybrid.

I don't like the tegs to be honest - If they're as good to drive as everyone says I'm all for it but looks wise for me its a no no..

Is MPG an issue? Also what did your missus think of the car as is this car for her/you or you/her. Please note the positioning of the names.

I suppose within that price bracket are:

106 gti
206 gti
306 gti-6
172
182
Fabia VRS with a remap
DC2 (bit on the older side)

thats what i thought when i first saw them but they have grown on me no end, go have a drive im sure youll like one. maybe not for the beauty of it but for the fact its different and a proper drivers car like the williams

out of that list id only bother with a played with 106 or dc2, 306s are good but not for me. 206s are crap 172/182 he dont like and fabia is a deisel aint it? that answers that lol.

I was under the impression this is a second car/a new car for his missus - but re-reading is this an actual replacement for the Williams2?

If its the former another good car to consider is the ST170:

This will be a daily driver for me primarily but also for the missus to use whenever needed, she doesn't want to drive the williams (for fear of my wrath more than anything lol) so I need to get something thats jump in and drive for both of us, thats fairly new/reliable but still gives me a buzz when driving..

Out of that list I'd only touch the 172/182, I'm not saying I hated the experience I was just a little unawed if thats the correct way of saying it...

Is a mk2 172 similar to drive to a 182? I know the power kicks in at different times but do they still feel quick? I can get more for my money looking at 172's over the 182's without losing out really, cruise control I can live without I have a steady foot lol

I also (well WE) don't want a cup, she doesn't like the blue and I fancy something with toys for a change!

I also want to mod whatever we get - you have more freedom with something other than a willy to play with what you fancy - I've heard the F4R's respond better to the cheap mods more than an f7r would.

tbh when i got my 182 it was weird to drive at first, prefered the williams due to the usual, but having owned the 182 for 2 year now i prefer, its a better car all round imho, easyier for town driving/motorway driving and still great fun on b-roads, mine has the cup pack suspension etc and after i got used to it i find its dead easy to drive fast confidently,

mine is a 04 plate with 34k and has all the toys, which is one reason why i got it, ppl can bat on about how good the williams is/was but times change and ppl change!

btw ive never had to replace anything on the 182 in 2 year other then general tyres/serivce work (just done cambelt kit/aux kit and full service today at £225 and its most ive spent on it lol)

btw if you want to mod the clio 172/182 theres tons of stuff out there for them both, i personally love the std exhaust/cat but have been tempted to have the inlets done and a remap, not expecting big power hikes but to smooth it out and improve the response below 4k.

the focus st170 is a very nice car with a great chassis but seriously let down by the engine/gear ratio, driven a few before and really wasnt impressed by the engine/power etc(maybe driving the focus RS is the reason lol)

def worth considering a integra type r, sound great, handle great and u can rev the tits off them, but lack low down grunt like the williams! also getting older now, unless u splash out on a dc5!

i have a golf gt tdi 130 remapped so probably running between 170-180bhp and 300 lbs of torque ( thats the usual figures for em ) heated leather recaro's, air con, bilstein suspension, 18" rims etc, you get the picture, its a NICE car, to drive very comfortable and easy to live with..........................but its also very boring if like me, which it sounds like you are, you want a bit of a buzz from your car, then a golf is NOT for you mate, sapp cossie is a NO NO aswell i had one, lost about 8k in a year and a half of owning it, and only did about 500 miles

dont get me wrong i love my golf, but it just doesn't do it for me, but thats what the mi16's for

26-01-2009, 00:10
oh yeah, the golf is awsome for overtaking bursts and it is pretty quick when you drive it hard! but its more of a nice cruiser

ahh sorry i thought you was looking at replacing the williams a dc2 wouldnt be to good for everyday use there shit on the motorway a 172 would make a nice everyday car not to different from a 182 but a few mods do the trick inlets matched is a good option as some of them are way out and are the difference between a good and a bad one, lowerd on some turinis and itll look nice.

How much do you have to spend mate?

S170 is babba, my mate has one, pasted many times by my Valver back in the day, great chassis etc, but dull and slow.

From test driving a LOT of Cups to find mine, you would be suprised how they varied, from slow to quick.

I found one with 18k on it, slow as funk. I think they do get quicker with age.

Saying that, I still prefer the Williams to drive, Cup is clean, no rust, quick but not as fun IMHO a lot down to it being standard I believe as Chris's is on par with my Williams for fun factor when I drive his.

Put a deposit down on an 02 172 today, 33k 1 lady owner from new, immaculate condition and at an absolute steal.

Feels like its never been driven over 5k before! So i expect lots of loosening up.. missus loves it of course

So aye the willy now is really going  had a great drive over though to see this 172 and they looked good together. my first opinion of the 172 is that its alreet and nothing more so far  I need to run it for a while before I make my comparisons known.

I wouldn't bother wasting your time looking at ST170s - I was looking at one for the wife and they just don't have any grunt. Chassis is great, but then you might as well just buy a cheap 1.6 if you want that.

Bit of a wildcard, but just got a seat ibiza tdi 130 sport for the mrs. paid £2500 for it with 51k on it.

Ok its only 130bhp, but its the same engine and box as the fabia vrs, golf gt tdi etc. Personally think it looks better though. and can be remapped to 190bhp. Be just as quick if not quicker than the willy.

I was expecting it to be a bit poop, but having driven it a few times i'm impressed with it, seems to handle well, and is bloody ace on fuel, averages 55mpg, and meant to do up to 68mpg. Has a 6 speed box too so hardly revs on the motorway.

cheap tax and insurance too.

doesnt need to be revved hardly. but then it only revs to 4500rpm anyway lol.

I'm in exactly the same boat, GT TDI MK5 golf and it just doesn't cut the mustard.

I'm buying a williams as a weekend toy just to bring the smile back to my face.

Nothing has the fun factor of the willy/16v and you'll regret selling it TBH

My missus passed in an Auto so there is no chat about getting rid of the Williams, not that I would anyway, I'd rather be single and homeless... :D

How does the 172 compare to the Williams Daz? I drove my mates 172 cup a few years ago and was impressed, but felt a bit soft compared to the Williams..

I know you've just bought a 172, but must admit that i reckon the fabia vRS is a brilliant car!

My dad's just bought one - absolute bargain. He paid £6900 for an 06 plate with 27k miles on the clock and very very rare full leather. 6 speed box and pulls like a train for a diesel. For the price he paid you can't beat it. I think the looks are very understated too. & with 4 doors is practicle!

My mate has a chipped one at about 180bhp, and can't keep with my hybrid though! Still, i'd love to be seeing 50+ mpg and do 100mph at 3k revs!
