Thanks all for that flurry of technical advice - so I now know I'm looking for sperm coloured rocking horse shit with a number SP3419 gd. Trouble is that is not a number recognizable to my spray shop so I believe we need the paint suppliers number not just Speedline's number which is what I believe this number is.

Any other ideas guys?

Do Speedline still exist?

No reply yet from Speedlinecorse but they are ringing italy where the wheels were supplied from. The Speedline code is SP 3419gd.

Meanwhile my paintshop man has advise they are painted Williams Racing Gold - Du Pont code J5055.

Does this sound right to anyone else?

We have it listed as Dupont code J5505. That is out of the 2004 colour code book though.

Thanks - being dikslecsic I tog ti the rwong way around - it is J5505

On the dupont website they give 4 different paints under that number
600
6000
L400
CROMAX

I think CROMAX IS A BASECOAT

Do you happen to know what they are - the tint combinations for each are different!

THANKS

The numbers just correspond to the laquers, hardeners etc. Cromax is the waterbased variant while the Centauri is for 2pack paint.

There is only 1 shade according to Dupont.

Mark, thanks - my guy can use 2 pack which I understand is a better finish so which of the numbers I gave is the 2 pack Centauri?

Hi all, below in orange is the definitive reply from Dupont received this morning so perhaps this should be added to a technical library - does the club have one?

Rob,

I have discussed your queries regarding your Clio Williams with Belgium and our Technical Tim Relf.

The DuPont Stock reference is definately J5505, the date of 1996 refers to when Belgium received the standard formula, not the year of your car.

The paint systems 600 and L400 are poor hiders, so C6000 (solvent) or Cromax our Waterbourne system would be the best to use.

The poor hider square refers to how well the colour would cover i.e. in this instance it would take numerous coats to cover properly.

Tim has advised that as long as the wheels are correctly prepared and primed, followed by the basecoat this should not cause a problem.
He also advised the use of an Epoxy Primer.

Kind Regards

Hi Rob some nice info there, we could do with the dupont text being made a sticky perhaps. now a further question after your research, im looking into doing my wheels at home first shiney edge is done, is there a aerosol equivalent of those dupont codes that i can obtain or do i just take what i have and try to get a colour match??

Katbloke.

PS As you are near me i might pop down and get a quote on some rear arch repairs:)

Not in the business and do not know but suspect that it would be possible to get a spray can made up with the right colour.

I am now struggling to find a polisher as it turns out that my machinist can lathe them to get the rims flat but not get the high polish on them - any ideas of where to go @ here in Devon as you are local

Hi Rob, i achieved my polished edge by various grades of wet n dry, depending how bad your edges are if badly pitted they will prob need skimming first, but i started of with a 120 grit to take out the pits followed by 240, 600, 800 until ultra smooth then i polished them with autosol metal polish(little gold n black coloured tube) imo they look good, once i get a camera sorted i will take some pics coz i want a proffesional opinion on the gold i chose.
