Jus taken my willy in 2 hav clutch cable and wheel bearing done and the garage called saying that alternator belt was hanging out. told them to replace it etc.

But they've called back sayin that the housing is broken and tensioner for its teeth are knackered also.Plus my water pump needs replacing as rusty

They've said that housing is £109 !!!!!!!!!!, so for all parts etc it comes to bout 300
But fitting is 350!!!!!!!!!!!!

Is there anywhere can get the housing from cheaper???

Had only budgeted for 200 odd quid not 700!!!!!!!!

Any help would be greatlly received

Not got any off ready at the mo, just need to find someone breaking an engine.
Quite a common problem for the teeth to be gone.

And how does a waterpump being rusty on the outside affect it's ability to pump water?
Go somewhere else.

sounds like you're being fobbed off mate

why would they even be looking at the alternator belt & water pump? The clutch cable is on the opposite side of the engine bay

could mean that the hole underneath has rusty water coming from it thus the seals are on there way out..

teeth are common but there not part of the housing iirc and can be replaced separately i did on mine..

Not on all, some they are cast into the casing, think they revised them so that they were replaceable.

all the ones iv worked on have been cast into the housing.

Easy enough to tension without the mechanism, just set the pully and undo one of the alternator bolts and then lever out to tension, takes a wee bit of trial and error to get the tension right, but once the pully is set its set for the next time it needs swapping

all the ones i have come accross are cast into the housing too, however the teeth on mine are wrecked and i managed to tension my aux belt repeatadly, just by having the 7mm allen bit much tighter than usual and having to push a little harder on the 21mm 'nut'. they can be done with no teeth and a large metal bar tho!

i have found that just moving the alternator doesnt give enough slack to get it over the sprocket without the belt being too loose after the alternator is put back.

I would NOT pay those garage prices! you could find someone much cheaper (on the forum) to do it for you.

where you based?
