What I'd do is get a phillips screwdriver, open it up, and have a look

However...I can tell you they are Panasonic CR2016 3V, and you need two for full charge.

No they key fob data is 'hardwired' data, much like the BIOS on a PC.

Bought a couple of batteries last night but the fob still doesn't work : ( (its never worked since I bought the car - I assumed it was the batteries but maybe not). I'll have to try and clean the fob up inside and if that doesn't work then I'll give up!

I know this is a bit difficult but can you describe where?

try the contacts for the batteries but basically try and clean up all the soldered joints a small stiff bristle brush (not nylon can create static) then carefully inspect all the joints to see if any of the soldered joints are broken sometimes it may need to be gently flexed to identify any probs or if your good with an iron get some flux and carefully resolder all the joints taking care not to create any shorts also might be an idea to check out the ir pcb for the same issues i found a couple of broken joints there too :) :)
