For my 108k service which should be getting done early next week, would you recomment that i change the gear box oil??

I'm planning on having the following replaced: engine oil (obviously), Power Steering fluid, brake fluid, coolant. Just not sure about gear box oil?

Also doing plugs, new oil filter/sump plug/washer, fuel filter, dizzy cap, rotor arm and plugs

Then the normal checks, think it'll need a new wheel bearing and rear pads too

I was recommended not to change the power steering fluid as it can cause more problems than it solves and the temps are low so the fluid shouldnt need it. Dont know if this is right, but id check it out if i were you.

And yes, i would do gearbox, if you dont know when it was last done. Needs to be done about every 2 years i think.

Well the power steering pump is quite noisy, but the fluid is always full. Just thought it'd be a good chance to put a decent amount of power steering treatment stuff in to quiten it down if i changed it all....... i'll ask about more then for that, cheers

Wilco do some gear box oil, 5 litres for £19.99, that going to be ok? Do they do differant oils (ie mineral, semi, fully synthetic) for gearbox as they do for engine oils?

I was told one person had the power steering pump replaced and the new one was just as noisey

Gearbox oil replacement can improve gearchanging and perhaps longevity of your gearbox.

I replaced my standard stuff with Redline after MX5 users recommended it for a notchy 1st to 2nd gear change. It was very good stuff and 20k later have had to replace being stupid enough to undo gearbox sump rather than engine sump. Oil came out so clean and nearest I could get was Millers 75w 90 oil. This comes in 5 litres and you need about 3.7 litres.

Think Redline stuff was better, Silkolene also do gearbox oil and that may be worth tracking down. Redline is so expensive these days, nearly 15 quid a quart and you will need 4. Millers can get 5 litres for about 30 quid. Easy to do yourself also.

Recommend changing gearbox oil !!!!!

Demon Tweeks. I cannot remember how much it is about £30 for 5 liters.
from looking at the can it looks like it only need 2.7 liters or so. It was used when I had the clucth changed so that definatly all that fits.

SAYS 3.4LT IN HAYNES

Yeah Haynes does state 3.4, think hit 7 instead of 4 above. Takes ages and it may actually take a bit more than that anyway, especially as you know its full when level with pouring hole so if you are lazy you can fill slowly until it starts to come out of there.

As most come in litre bottles or quarts if getting american brands (still think the redline was better than millers) you will need 4 or a 5 litre pack will be cheaper, with some left over.

Can sell whats left of my millers for the cost of a tenner if anyone wants it then just need 2x1 litre bottles of millers to go with it.
