I have an issue about the model names Renault has assigned to its Clio.

Whenever I get into a conversation with someone about my car, they might say ‘ooh whats this then an RSi, or a williams?’

and I have to sigh and say ‘no its a sixteen valve’ or ‘valver’.

We all know this is better but someone less informed may not. He might say ‘why are u telling me how many valves its got?’

So I think the ‘valver’ should be called an ‘RSi’ cos it just sounds cooler.

Ah but when the Clio 16v came out, that was a selling point having 16 valves.
Which makes it quite cool as its a sign of the times lol

well ok i suppose. but it would be nice to say 'ooh yes i have an clio RS'

I think they used the RS name too early. Names like RSi and Williams are definitive names for top end models. Wheras 16v is badged after 1.2 and 1.6 on newer models.

I agree. I think renault got it wrong when they named this car. Ok, sounded good at the time, a great selling point with the 16valves given the time they were introduced, but as your man says, whenever I tell someone what car I have and I say ''a 16v clio'', they look at me like im being/talking like a complete cock!

When you say you have a golf gti, or a citroen saxo vtr, your man on the street can relate to it, and generally knows what it is.

When you tell someone you have a clio 16v, they dont have a clue what your talking about!

You say you have a mark 2 golf gti, peeople usually say nice car, say you have a clio 16v, they dont know what your talking about! Might as well be an RT to them!

Plus the 16v was a bed for the williams to be introduced, i.e robbing most parts from a 16v, and when you tell someone that they think your being a twat!

yes my thoughts exactly. Golf GTI's are bad boys and im a big fan, and there are loads of other GTi / VTS named cars in the same league as the clio, but the clio is never mentioned or compared to them. Even though its probably better then them all in my view.

Anyway its probably for the best cos there are millions of golf GTis and dog poo saxos about and valvers/williams are kinda rare so thats good.

Aye but when you think the Clio 16v has the lowest insurance group of the hatches, its probably hand in hand why not alot people know about it.

Could always buy a Williams ;) everyone knows them lol

honestly who cares? end of the day its a car, name doesnt matter, fact is we know they are decent little motors so any way people get it wrong is more fool them and a laugh for us, personally i like it, understated and misjudged is half the appeal of these cars to me 8)

Most people assumed my valver was a williams anyway. If they know nothing they were at least impressed it had a 1.8 litre engine in and everyone liked the look of it.

back in the day - I'm showing my age now.... - not many cars came with a 16valve engine - 16 valves was seen as a route to performance - so yes, back in the early 90's, driving a 16v car WAS cool. The Golf GTi 16v was soooooo much cooler than the normal GTi for instance.... now, in the 16 years or so since the Clio 16v was launched, times have changed significantly and all cars now have a 16v engine....

Just remember, in the day... it was a very cool car, 16v was the route to high performance and now it is left to those "in the know" to recognise these cars for what they are...

So I think the ‘valver’ should be called an ‘RSi’ cos it just sounds cooler.

It does.

However,

as an owner of one i personally would take OFFENCE if the valver gays tried to blag some of the RSI credibilty!

having owned two 8v's in my time I am slightly biased but I don't think the 16v was quite pants.....

he's saying the 16v should've had the rsi name and the rsi be called something else
