Clio Williams 2: Mechanical Refurbishment/Overhaul

Basically, I'm going to be updating the page below whenever something happens.. all the way to the point where it's back on the road.

Good lad

Looked a good page until i saw you are fitting 195 50 15's. Then you lost my attention.

Daz
20-02-2005, 13:19
Haha, I prefer them.

Had them on my 3, and it just felt more.. solid.. dunno, personal preference I guess.. ;)

KingStromba
20-02-2005, 13:23
Looks gash mate. - 20 points from the Williams owners club judging panel for non originality. -20 points for wet weather safety. And -20 points for gash looking lower profile tyres.

Daz
20-02-2005, 13:24
Haha.
+200 for being man enough to use 195/50's.. ;)

KingStromba
20-02-2005, 13:28
LOL. And -200 points for buying a cheap ass tyre.

No, seriously looks a good project. Better get some detailed pics up here. Can we have a run down of the problems youve got with it?

Daz
20-02-2005, 19:43
Nah, it's not about being clean.. hehe.

Who cares how clean it is when the engine's coming out?

I'll clean it when it's all done.. so it's all mint for when I get driving it again!

KingStromba
20-02-2005, 20:44
Northy have a word

Daz
20-02-2005, 21:47
Ha.

I very rarely clean it anyway.. once every 2 months or something, heh.
Might start doing it more when it's all sorted.

KingStromba
20-02-2005, 22:38
What you going to do when the arches start to rust?

Daz
20-02-2005, 23:04
Well, I'll leave it until it gets really bad.. then get it done, but get it done really well.. so you can't notice, and not accept it until it's perfect.

But anyway.. I'm enjoying it being mint at the moment, heh.

Daz

Subframe looks a bit rusty man. Thought it had mint body work

MatBrown
06-03-2005, 19:15
But that's easy enough to just unbolt and fit a new one.

You think i really give a shit about paint work?

that oil filters not genuine and looks very old

Seriously impressed with your garage space mat, so whats the plan with the engine....light overhall or just clean ?

You need to add on the web page time taken aswell. :D

Yea, that Oil Filter.. dunno whats going on. We noticed it too..

As for whats being done, well.. seeing as engine is out, might aswell do anything which is likely to cause hassle later. Look how easy it is to change the alternator once the engine's out! (that's on the list!)
Got all the parts coming together now.. engine mounts, belts, tensioners etc..

I took the time off, because that isn't important, hehe. Whats important is, the end product.. :D

His garage rocks.. so useful, especially when you know what ya doing like he does! It'd be useless for me, unless I'm maybe, um, cleaning the car.. haha.

oil filter.....looks like it could poss be a frsh job....the muppets thinkin..fuk that jus give it a squirt wi wd, make it look clean, its too hard to get off.... possibility...iv seen it done b4.lol

KingStromba
06-03-2005, 21:12
How the hell does an oil filter go rusty? Typical reno

MatBrown
06-03-2005, 23:34
Yeah,

Was expecting a real struggle to get the oil filter off but about fell over as it wasn't tight at all!
God knows how long it's been on there :?

There is an oil leak somewhere that needs addressing and the N/S driveshaft boot had a slight hole which is why the subframe is black that side (and probably less rusty!), what else happens to the engine is up to how much Daz wants to spend and what else i find up with it.

As for time, i got Daz to take it off, but all you need to do it look at the dates when he posts on the site!

Mat.

KingStromba
06-03-2005, 23:40
Yeah the oil has protected my sub frame from rust nicely.

When did i say it was mechanically perfect?

Daz
13-03-2005, 23:22
Update time.

Not much of one, but.. tyres have been fitted to alloys..

King Stromba, can you spot the deliberate mistake?

http://www.dazjw.eclipse.co.uk/cars/williams2/overhaul/pictures/stage6/pic2-small.jpg

Oh, they've been cleaned, too!

http://www.dazjw.eclipse.co.uk/cars/williams2/overhaul/

KingStromba
13-03-2005, 23:32
Shit tyres?

Daz
13-03-2005, 23:34
Dunno, never used them.. some people like them, some people don't like them, some people like them but not in the wet.. heh.

In similar news, they are the official size of the supreme handling lovers..

KingStromba
13-03-2005, 23:37
So whats the deliberate mistake?

You have the wheel balancer on the outside of the alloy?

Daz
13-03-2005, 23:38
195/50/15's...

KingStromba
13-03-2005, 23:59
Its been proven that using 195's causes homosexual tendancies in the driver

MatBrown
14-03-2005, 00:40
So whats the deliberate mistake?

You have the wheel balancer on the outside of the alloy?

The Wheels were not in a state to worry about where the weights were going to be stuck.
If you want to get all anal, i can say that if they were balanced in the factory that is where they would have been, so by using stick-on weights hidden on the inside of the wheel you are deviating from standard!

Mat.

Are the tyres meant to be directional?

If so they shouldn't all be on the same way round should they?

MatBrown
15-03-2005, 15:41

Sorry mate,

Didn't mean to come across like that, i know your always on the wind-up and i don't bite easily. :)

Mat.

MatBrown
15-03-2005, 15:46

They are Asymmetrical, as long as they are mounted on the rims the right way they can be used on either side of the car.

Mat.

Daz
15-03-2005, 15:52
Haha.. after all that, and no mistake (well, maybe if ya like 185/55!) .. just using 195/50/15's.. instead of 185/55's which I didn't get on with at all.. felt unstable to me.. 195/50's feel planted.

Wind up merchants, the lot of ya!

KingStromba

Just out of interest what is the wear like on your engine? Mine was very good at 140,000. Nice to see what condition others are in? :D

MatBrown
25-03-2005, 22:14
Hard to tell really without looking at the pistons and liners and we are not disturbing the headgasket, will leave that till the next time.

Mat.

KingStromba
25-03-2005, 22:22
What about general engine bay condition?

MatBrown
25-03-2005, 22:27
As you pointed out the subframe has a bit of rust and was talking to daz today about taking it off and getting it powder coated in the colour of his liking.
The rest of the bay will be fine once DAZ has cleaned all the shit off it!
Any patches of rust found will be smothered.

Mat.

Daz
25-03-2005, 22:35
Yea, I thought the bay was pretty mint - just covered in crap.. hehe.
Will have to get in it with some degreaser and a bit of elbow grease!

Winston
25-03-2005, 22:45
I would advise subframe sand blasting and powder coating

I sanded all the rust off mine and spayed it with shit loads of plasticoat but the rust is coming back already.

If I ever get the willy subframe i bought of riplash I will get that power coated.

good work btw :D

Daz
25-03-2005, 22:49

Yea, powder coating is an option I wanna look at. It's just surface rust, so get that off and get it coated.. I reckon it'd look great and preserve it well.

Mat's been working very hard on the car.. Big thanks to him! :D :D

KingStromba

25-03-2005, 23:19
that garage is awesome, enough space for hydraulic ramps and 4 cars?

MatBrown
26-03-2005, 00:51
Looking but the trouble is that it needs to be single phase lift and most of the ones out there are three phase.
Have got a new toy coming tho, kinda a cross between drive-on ramps and see-saws!
Ideal for working under the car, say on the exhaust, but not so good if you need to remove a wheel.

Mat.

Mark_Ritchspeed
26-03-2005, 11:29
Took us ages to find a single phase 4 post lift as well . Had it about 4 weeks and still havent got around to putting it together .

Ooooh.

All parts I think are now bought.. and the engine is more or less ready to go back in the car!

Few more bits (brakes, fuel filter etc..) to do but then it's good to go!

I'll get some pics tomorrow and update the page, hehe..

Mat done some more stuff tonight.. got the clutch, right hand engine mount, thermostat, oil pressure sender etc.. changed.. pretty cool.
I'm sure we'll get some more done tomorrow..

Daz
29-04-2005, 23:03
Hehe, need to update the webpage now.

It's out of the garage, running sweet.. lovely.

Heating in the car now, which is nice.. and everything's all new and working.

I cleaned it in the dark the other night, and, um, left bits off so it's clean in some parts but muddy in others, hehe. Going to wash again tomorrow and probably polish etc.. it so it's all nice for when it's back on the road.

Clutch is so nice.. it was mega worn when we took it out - right down to the rivets, so was a wonder it wasn't slipping.

Engine also gets warm now which is cool.. low temp thermostat keeps it nice tho.. but before, the coolant didn't get warm at all because the thermostat was stuck open.

The bulbs, well.. they seem bright. If you look at them head on, you can see proper blue in it.. which is cool. The main thing is tho they light up the road.. so will have to see how they are when I get it on the road again.

Couple of things left to do.. numberplate light and we think a fan switch, but then it should be good to go.

I'll have to get some pics tomorrow when it's all clean.. Hopefully it'll be good weather!

Big thanks to Mat (and Jay) for getting it done. Amazing work, as there was quite a lot to do! Thanks mate!

As for pics, I have some.. but I wanna get it all clayed up first.

I polished it the other day but the bottom of the doors need claying first as it's just filthy. Will spend some time on it when I get it back and probably polish and get it all clean.

As for FCS, dunno what's happening yet. I'm going but not sure if I'm going in my car or what.

Heh, I had one on my 3.. and I didn't really feel it made that much difference tro warrent changing back, even once a year.. after the MOT on my 3, I just left the Cat on..

big hp

I found this on my 16v so have just left the cat on.

Williams has a de-cat so may leave that off as well.

Daz
04-05-2005, 20:29
Mine might have been a slightly unfair comparison with the Cat/Decat, as, I took the induction kit off at the same time on my 3 (Put standard airbox on!). It's difficult to compare between cars too, but, round here they do on the spot emission tests, and the hassle of changing it atleast once was too much, heh.

Now MOT is done, I can get my new plate assigned.. Yay!

So, Friday.. I'm back in the Williams all the time.. which is nice.
I've been driving an Mx-3 V6 so it's been OK.. but can't wait to get in the Willy again.

I pick up my williams 2 this weekend, looking forward to it.

Look around for a car which comes close in all areas for about the same money - I'd say, one doesn't exist.

Hope you enjoy yours.

04-05-2005, 22:15
So do I. Just hope they are that much better than a valver. Couldn't tell much from the test drive, obviously have to take it steady when its not your car and the girl brings her mum out on the test drive.

I'll still have my valver as well until I sell it so will get a real feeling of how they compare. Then it'll be a cheap run around for work. unless I keep the valver.
