I have a numbered plaque in my car and I'm challenging you to prove me it's fake! :D I know that such high number should not exist, but maybe someone snatched original unstamped willy plaque and than put it in this car. Or maybe they had some left over...

did they make 6000 Willy 1's??? I'm not sure, I thought they only made 2000 or so, of which 400 came to the UK....

country code is the first digit

im no expert, but id like to put money on it

0171 is our mandys - bit hard to prove it as it looks genuine.

Maybe the full dash was swapped

One way to check is to find the moulding dates that will be stamped on the plastics....1993 1994 1995 etc....

Yours is a williams 2 Rob?

How many Williams were numbered? 2500, 3500 or 3600? I don't know exactly. I was informed Williams was a homologisation car for Group F2, Renault had to made 2500 (they were Phase 1, all of them have a numbered plaque). Later I read somewhere some Ph2s were numbered too, and the total number of the numbered Williams is 3500. The previous owner of mine said, there are 3600 numbered Willis. Robi's one is Ph 2 and has a plaque with 6035. I'm confused. :S. I'm sure there were 12100 Williams manufactured but how many of them were numbered? :S

Would the first digit be the country code? I'm not sure. 0441 was bought in Austria (now it's running in Hungary), my car (1984) came from Switzerland. Mine was made in 6/93, every moulding dates are between March and May of 1993.

Well I heard there were 5000 Williams 1, around 4000 Williams 2 and 3000 Williams 3. My car is a Williams 2 (although very early one) and it's from Switzerland. It was made in 94'. In over a year of ownership I tried to find any mistakes or difference in material the plaque was made of and the plaque itself looks completly genuine. This is why I posted this challange. Maybe if someone posted his plaque whisch would include similar numbers as mine we could compare font of the numbers.

the thing being if you were going to fake a plaque then why pick such and odd/high number to fake.

would be better to fake a lower number really...would it not.. :D

robi1000
03-09-2008, 10:29
Well, maybe that guy who faked it (allegedly) respected Williams 1 so much that he made plaque consistent with actual Williams production. :? But first I must know if it's really fake. Yanoo where did you read that they numbered some ph2 also?

Hi Robi!

Mine is also from Switcerland, and also a phase2, but it does not have any plaque unfortunately. It is road legal since 1994.11.30
Do you know the first plate no of the car?? like ZH.....

that was the "Swiss Champion", with totally different numbering.

No, unfortunately I don't know the first license plate my car had. I can only go as far back as first slovenian number plate. Maybe I could source the car via swiss dealership database (if the car was ever serviced there they should have it's VIN in their database). Can this also be checed from other countries (is this database international)?

im not an expert on the plague, but the first two pics plaques' have a bevelled edge, unlike the bottom one. The gold and blue colouring also seem different, the gold espesh. Although this could just be the camera.
I might have the eagle eye on this one, but like i say I dont know much about the plaques so i might be wrong?

shall we all post piccys of our plaques (those who have them of course...) to aid in the investigation..... so what titch is saying is the 1984 looks fake???

yes i would say 1984 looks fake, however - not a uk williams, so ud need to compare left hand drive to left hand drive methinks.... if all plaques are indeed to be the same, id say 1984 is off from the other two. im perhaps not onto anything, dont know if anyone else can see it

titcharoony

although 6035 looks left hand drive too actually....

Yup got the car down to De-Feet and let Mr De Fleet cast his expert eye over it, he seemed quite happy that it is straight and solid plus he seems pretty mustard for blasting, welding and painting etc FOC so happy days

Also we have secured a quiet corner of his work shop to 'store' it :smt006

http://i117.photobucket.com/albums/o60/captainfunbags/WILLIAMS/06092008.jpg

Got the front all stripped out, TFR'd and jet washed

http://i117.photobucket.com/albums/o60/captainfunbags/WILLIAMS/06092008007.jpg

Then removed the dash :smt087
