Im looking at buying my mates ph1 valver on a k plate. It hasnt got a gear box, and has slight rust on the rear arches. Anyone know of anything i should be looking for other than that, common problems, things which i could look for which are costly to replace etc. The engines on 108,000 miles, but has been off the road for the past 2 years. Was thinking bout getting it for a donar car but dont have a clue as what to look for/listen for. Dont want to get shafted over it. Any help would be appreciated.
Cheers
Nick

check for play in the steering rack
check the subframe for damage
ask why the gearbox was removed
make sure all the bits are included (driveshafts, flywheel and clutch)

How much are you paying mate ? As cars that age with mot and tax come up on ebay often for £600 - £1000

my pleasure mate...there are alot more people with mk1's on this site.

Can u get some pictures up of it,

Is it complete bar the gearbox ?

Budget £100 for a second hand gearbox with no history, cambelt change, oil, and filterschange and a set of full brakes (£100 from gaztwo)

and you'll be back running....unless u brake it. But for £250 id get a box mot and tax it then sell it on for some coin.
