View Full Version : 195 tyres over 185

Right, I know this has been discussed a million times but I wanted to pass on my personal findings. I just had 195/50 F1's put on the other day, with the Williams. Had 185 previously.

The grip is great etc etc, BUT I have found it tramlines more and has lost a bit of adjustability through the steering wheel. I preferred the 185's.

It could be my tracking is out a bit etc, and I have yet to test what tyre pressure I am on, but I dont think either is out that much.

It is a shame there is such a premium on 185's!

I don't notice any tramlining with 195 50s. must be your tracking?

my other valver has 185 55s which I drive regularly, so I get a good back-to-back comparison.

Abit unfair to evaluate if you think the trackings out, and you havn't played around with the pressures.

Nope this is how going to 195's feel - waste of a good car having it on 195s imo - if your not a hard driver or its modded then be my guest but to 'feel' a willy under you on decent 185's is ace

Ah but the 19 which the Williams robbed its bits from, came with 195's as standard

And is also a totally different car!

Different wheels alter the weight, different shocks affect the handling, different weight of car different locations of weight distribution in the car :D

It's like me saying my missus' fiesta has got the same tyres on as the willy - handles like a spud in comparison!

Wobba all I'll say is if you hankered for one all those years ago and are finally glad you've got one now enjoy the car as it should be rather than the cheapest option.

Id hardly say totally different car, it shares alot of Renaults parts bin.
And the drive isn't far off either.

The thing is with Renault robbing the track from the 19, why did they choose not to use the 195 tyres.
They used them later on with the ph1 172 so perhaps they saw improvement.

Tracks different on a 19 16v, think its about 25mm difference over a williams

Ive tried and tested this! lol

Arh mat wills old williams.....one very sweet car!

When i was at RWS in 2006 i was lucky enough to speak to one of the guys involved in developing the williams.

The reason they fitted Pirellis to 0001 is thats what they had to hand, and at that time the size 185 55 15 was fitted as thats what was avaliable. HX had just come out so thats what was used. The HX was even used on my xantia lol...

Wheels - most change to 195/50/R15s for their cheapness and in my opinion again give you more feedback through the wheel

Found Here: http://www.williamsclio.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?t=22556&highlight=daz+195

Everyone is entitled to change their opinion I guess.
Although, this does bring into question current opinion too.

Daz, what tyres are you running in 185's?

Also 15 years of advancement in tyre technology could bring the same tyre dynamics/behaviour in a tyre which is 6mm thinner than the original original tyre (used 15 years ago).

I have driven a car on 55 tyres as opposed to 50's - sure did give a smoother ride and less amplification of the road surface. Cannot really comment on performance/handling or anything else, as they were old tyres and other factors changed, thus not allowing a fair comparison.

What I can say is I am using Mich PE2's in 195 50 15 with new suspension etc and the car feels great - although I havent compared directly with 55 tyres (all other factors remaining the same) and thus cannot compare. I will definitely consider the 185's next time around and 'feel' the difference (or hopefully Daz will take me for a spin and show me the difference).

PS: Daz, stromba is selling separate willy wheels if you are still looking for one.

185's slightly comfier, 195's slightly better grip... horses for courses really. I prefer 195's as they are half the price and the car's no better or worse for it.

Na the colour is way out
Since when did looks become apart of suspension and shared parts.

When cars get updated, manufacturers usually look at the next model above, then see what can be implemented to reduce development costs.

The 197 is a good example of having the hand me down subframe setup from the Megane 225.

205 55's, fit and yes I have tried them for 15 miles LOL.
Car was in a bit of a state back then, thus unable to give a fair review.

205, 55's!

Turned your williams into a monster truck ?

Joking mate, how do they fit on ? are they still ok in the arch's on full lock etc?

195/50/15 Eagle F1's are the best tyres I have ever used, I won't bother looking around for another make of tyre until Goodyear stop making them and I can't get them anymore. I had 4 original Michelin HX 185/55/15's on mine ages ago (they came with the car), not a patch on the F1's imo, and lethal in the wet

Having driven the car harder than I have previously, I have to say the grip is outstanding. GOnna try a slightly lower pressure as it has 34 psi at mo.

My original Williams many years ago had 205's on the rear - I actually quite liked the balance with 185's on the front - it stuck to the road like glue - was quite a shock when I eventually switched back to 185' all round....

Hahaha - this was when I bought the car.

Rubbed on arches slightly - but that could also be due to the 'unknown' suspension it had on which I binned.

This thread IMO was pretty good from a long time ago.
Pay particular notice to the comments of Mark Ritchspeed.

says to me 195s rock ;)

more grip, less adjustability on the limit, slightly harsher ride, sharper turn in, faster lapping, cheaper

do i need to go on?

iv had both, original hx's, pe2s, a539s, both sizes of all except the hx's which were 185s.

iv never been back to 185s after taking them off anyway.

Please :D

More grip - sometimes good
Less adjustability on the limit - bad
slightly harsher ride - bad
sharper turn in - good
faster lapping - bad unless you live on a track
cheaper - dependant on brand but yes, but my how much £10 - 15? not exactly the saving of the century!

I've had enough of this bloody topic now

More grip - sometimes good
Less adjustability on the limit - bad..................why? makes it more interesting lol
slightly harsher ride - bad.......not really. personal preference
sharper turn in - good
faster lapping - bad unless you live on a track.......i dont find them bad, and i dont live on track
cheaper - dependant on brand but yes, but my how much £10 - 15? not exactly the saving of the century!.........no, but £40-50+ on a set is a fair chunk.

I've had enough of this bloody topic now

Well its obvious! your arse must be chunkier than mine

I wonder what the preffered choice is these days anyway? we should set up a poll i'm curious to see what people have on and what type of car they drive - i.e standard willy, stripped willy, valver etc..
