Hi all.
I've just had reconditioned box fitted to m williams 2 and I dont think the ratios are correct. What speeds should I be able to achieve in each gear?
Mine roughly does:
1st = 30mph
2nd = between 55 and 60mph
3rd = just under 80 mph
4th = ?
5th = at 5500pm it's doing 105mph, surely this one isn't right?!

Cheers
Marti

Im no gear guru,

but I was sure only 16v (JC3) boxes did 60 in 2nd and willy (JC5) needed 3rd for 60 or is that a myth?

Is it definately a willy box?

I know that doesnt answer your question entirely but i was just curious..

the williams will only do 58ish in 2nd due to low rev limit, and 80 in 3rd, about 100 in 4th, all on std limiter, 16v does more due to limter more then owt!

Oh right, so its more to do with the limiter than gearing?

Probably, because you reach the limit 600 rpm`s quicker with the will than with 16v.

Formula enclosed for Speed etc.
Wheel revs per mile can be got from the tyre manufacturers.

FORMULA :- 60 X R.P.M
WHEEL REV’S/MILE X AXLE RATIO X G/BOX RATIO

AXLE RATIO = FINAL DRIVE

GEARBOX RATIO = WHAT EACH GEAR IS.

I have posted replies to similar questions on here.As well as gear ratios etc etc ~ the dimension of the tyre can play a big part.I have low profile 40/45 x17" diameter tyres,that have the same diameter as a tall 60/65 profile 15" ~~ which obviously determines the speed.
I hope the above formula is of use to you.

I get in the 1.4 16v corsa.

This is limiter bouncing.

1st-30mph.
2nd-50mph.
3rd-75mph
4th-90mph
5th-115mph.

Can't remember but around 6600 / 7000 ish the needle is up close to the 135/140 so 105 sounds a bit low, clutch slipping ?

i get 80 at 3500 and around 100 at 5000, don't really tend to be looking at the rev counter after that its more eyes on the road :S

105 in 5th at 5500rpm (assuming ~ 195 50 15 tyres) suggests that you have a JC5 028 or 029.

these are from the mk1 Lagunas I think, (B56)

Not sure what i get in the coupe.

60 in 2nd

90 in 3rd

120 in 4th

dunno in 5th 130 +

Try out my gearbox program I think it'll help you. Although it's Hungarian (:D) but I think, You'll be able to use it.
Alapjárati fordulatszám: idle rpm
Legnagyobb motorfordulat: rev limit
Kerékméret: wheel size
Egyedi áttételezés: custom ratio
Számolás: calculation

You need to convert km/h to mph. The program counts with dynamic wheel diameter, so it takes into consideration the deformation of the tyre. You can download it from here:
