Any way of testing these to check if they are in proper working order.

I see your point - I normally also only use lifters which i know work.
Problem is lifters are so bloody expensive :-)

Anyone got a rule of thump regarding checking lifters for function?

yes, dont use noisey ones

check the centre section moves freely, but not loosely.

If they are jacked, tap them on a bench to pop the centre out. clean them, and pump the oil out.

Ok....

All of the center sections move freely inside of the lifter body.

But a few of the center sections are "springy" and the rest are rock hard.... Any reason for this difference?

Put them away for the weekend soaking them in oil.....

the ones which are solid are jacked i.e. full of oil. were they noisey before hand.

if in doubt, fit new ones...
