Sorry to poison this forum with this thread. I have signed up to clio sport but cannot get the answers to my questions as I aint paying!!

The time has come to definately sell the 16v so it will be up for sale on here within the next 2 weeks. Ive owned it for 4 1/2 years and it will break my heart to see it go to be frank. My life is just too busy at the moment and the 16v needs a few things doing to it which i just havent got the time to do.

Im buying a 17-2 phase I. Ive thought long and hard over the last week, and for sure im selling up.

Whats the main factory faults with the cars? Anyone on here know?

Whats this about the coil pack problem?

Are they good at 90k-ish with full service history or a no-go area would we say?

What do i need to check for?

Thanks in advance :o

So you honestly think I wont be as impressed as Im thinking?

Surely theyre an improvement on a 16v?

People talk about the phase1 172 as though theyre the worst hot hatch renault has ever produced!?

I dont fancy stretching to cup money though.

They never did a cup on a mark 2 phase 1 17-2 did they?

That was mark3?

£ to performance theres just no other car I can see that would match it, certainly none that I like though

Read the EVO review of 172 vs Williams:
http://www.williamsclio.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?t=23442

Things have moved on since then, with regards reliability I guess. But any Renault will develop problems with age.

172 Ph1 - I bought mine had 1 owner and 72k on the clock.
FRSH with all receipts

My standard 172 was certainly faster than a stock Williams...6500 Limiter - enough said.
Early Silver ones had the Aluminium Bonnet (worthwhile) and gear shift Light (novelty factor). I personally always like the look of silver, front lights blended into the car.
Where the Williams is a focused car of racing orientation - the 172 is a grand tourer. Much better car than a 16v.
Economical as an everyday car.

Bad Points:
Engine Mounts need changing often as mentioned by 2live.
Mine had no rattles (although I have heard of the rattling problems also)
My clutch wasnt as good as it should be after 75k, so i had it changed as a (no point having a performance car which doesn't run well).
Spark Plugs cost £80 from reno (but only need changing every 72k.

As with all renaults, provided they have been well maintained, they are great reliable, quick, fun cars.

When I sold mine it was on 83-84k and it was still going strong, no faults no problems. I did 10k worth of motoring, got it serviced once, and changed the clutch. Apart from that no other problems.

I prefer my 172 to my Williams from an ownership perspective... it's just better for everyday use. It's not as nice looking, but with the suspension mods it now handles miles better than my Williams and isn't much slower.

Given the choice I'd not go back, this one cost peanuts to run in comparison.

Eternalife & The Jesus! Really appreciate your input thanks!

And thanks for the read wobba!

Ive been in love with the 16v for the last 4 years and still am to an effect, and I have been stubborn, saying Ill never sell it, its a great car, better than anything else on the road, blah blah and I guess thats the thing with people who say, 17-2's are shite/nowhere near as good as a willy/16v etc, which I dont blame anyone for as you become in love with the car you are passionate about and own!

the majority of people who slag the 172 off haven't driven one to be fair. They aren't as fun standard, but they are easier to live with. My Williams had breathing mods and cams and the 172 with breathing mods and an Omex isn't much slower.

TBH with the suspension I have on now it's much better and now more fun that my Williams ever was... I'd deffo recommend replacing the standard setup on any Mk2, but personally I'd budget over £1k for coilovers, get a twin tube setup then you dont have to compromise between road or track.

where as id say the opposite and say unless your going on track alot dont bother with coilovers ive been there done that and at £600 they wernt cheap, i have now gone back to standard shocks and apex springs and think its sooo much better

all down to prefrence i guess

Which ones had the ally bonnet?

Is it literally a handul or designated to a year?

Early Silver (titanium) models - mine was a 2000 and it had the aluminium bonnet and the gearshift light.
Dont remember hearing any of the icebergs (or any other colour) having the alu bonnet.
