View Full Version : 17poo faster than a Willy?

The reason I ask is I was having some fun with a Mk1 17poo on the A38 this evening.... up to about 90mph there was nothing in it but above that he definately started gaining.....

Would that indicate my car down on power or his being up? I noticed he had a phat exhaust when I pulled off.... mine has only just had a major overhaul service and has been running very sweetly....

Any thoughts? Sorry for letting the side down..... :( :(

erm work it out mate.

williams = 150 bhp
17 2 = 17 2 bhp

  if both are standard the 17 2 will always come out on top???? am i right?

but theres more to it than that

power to weight
gearing etc

Power/weight ratio doesn't really matter at higher speeds, becomes more about power/torque/aerodynamics so i'd say its sounds about right.

Well i currently have both and i would say my 172 ph2 definately feels faster probably corners aswell too but makes more fuss of corners than my williams does.

Watch the willy v 197 on you tube that tif needle does.

The 197 (newer than a 1-8-2/1-7-2) is 250KG heavier and more power. Average person weighs 70Kg on the light side, so thats lets say 4 people. You stick 4 people in a williams and see what that does to acceleration/peformance!!

I would bet my life that a willy would outperform a 1-7-2/1-8-2???

Im sure some physics nut could work that power to weight ratio against performance.

I reckon a willy in a straight line from a standing start would do a 1-7-2/1-8-2 even a 197??

cant say for mk1 17poo but id def say my 18poo is faster then my williams ever was, std to std

but my hybrid is faster lol

again going off personal experience(own a 182, a hybrid and untill recently a williams) my 182 is def faster then the williams ever was in a straight line, i have a road that i always use to test them to see the difference, but as i put my hyrbid is faster, but thats cammed/mapped etc lol

If Both Cars are Standard and driver's are pretty good.

I would say the 172, but then again all depends on Gearing, Power to Weight, How fast you dare "Race" too, ETC ETC.

i had some fun with my willy against a 172 and i was pushing him along...all the way up to 130 on a track but im sure my car has had stuff done to it. its always seemed really quick

172 has 165 bhp/tonne
willy has 156 bhp/tonne

If my weights are correct and I believe they are then thats how it stands.

Seems about right the 172 has more overall grunt than the willy but the willy is lighter from the off, would mirror your experience of the 172 gaining an advantage the further round the speedo you get.

To be honest though both seem to make more power that quoted, tend to have the odd mod and it would only take something in the boot, cds in the glovebox, that bargain bucket you just had and half a tank of fuel to change the outcome eveytime! :D

After saying i own both and the 172 is faster this morning i was following my mate to his house after collecting his 17-2 and there was nothing in it atall accept in the furthest naughty parts of the speedo so im quite pleased that by moving to a williams i havent lost that much in terms of performance :)

172s will pull on a std williams topend, simply because it has more power and tourque, put some cams in the willy or take all the interior out and its a diffrent story

hmm... interesting... I'd ignore the bhp per ton nonsense, 172's dont make claimed power... no where near in fact. We RR'd a stock 182 a bit ago and it was 166bhp. Mk2's dont make their book figures apart from on crappy rolling roads in my experience.

2 live is coming to mine on Saturday, so hopefully we'll get to have a play, both have similar mods. Will let you know how it goes.

similar mods??????????

wtf??

i have a cat back s/s exhaust. thats it. lol

coilies, de-cat zorst, standalone ecu......shall i go on??

lol

sorted the dodgy vibration out......hmmmmm sweet again now tho. jus needs the brakes fettlin when i have more time.

vs tweeked r5gtt, him lightened, tuned, slicks, etc etc etc, me..cams remap decat, coils, michy pe2s, a passenger (instructor) and brakes still trying to cool from the previous sessions fading lol.

have a load of vids featuring williams vs 17/82. never had a problem with em tbh, like for like mods

meh, still should be about even i reckon. I'm running an open IK (mmm heat soak 8) ), decat that's got holes in it, cat back and a road mapped Omex. It's not much quicker than a standard 172 (Laura's old and new one)... reckon it will be fairly interesting with your being a freakishly quick one!

Coilovers I concede... your suspension wont touch my twin tube loveliness and 400/750lb springs ;) hehe

Anyway, you sorted that drive shaft out?

172 is 168 of our bhp so its about right - and its very relevant I'd say bhp per ton - its what we're all after!

anyway you'll end up saying the one you own is faster

ive raced a std 17 2 in my valver up to 100mph i could just stay with it,mines chipped,de-cat and a s/s i think the 17 2 must of been std as i could smell his cat must admit was giving mine deff!! i did manage to get past him tho as he started braking for the roundabout and i didnt my back end went abit light as i was very hard on the anchors then we both went differnt way....

i raced a 182 in my stripped out valver to 100mph there was nothing in it at all he had an extra passenger in his.when e stopped at the lights he asked what was in mine and told him it was standard and he couldnt beleive it lol

wow, aint been online for ages but theres still the good old mk1 V mk2 threads! :D

if i raced a willy in a striaght line im cirtain it would pull away up to 4k revs but then i would start pulling back slowly....in the williams i remember having pull right from the off however in the 197 you dont get thrown back in your seat till you hit 4k revs....having said that the 197 pulls like a train from 4k right untill limit....

what are the 17poo & 18poo rev range like???

richy
05-07-2008, 13:08
my 182 pulls strong untill 4k ish then theres a big kick as it just pulls like a train right to the limiter, on a bumpy road its a pain as it trys pulling you all over the road lol, but that might be more noticable with 205/45/16 tyres

all the 197s ive driven when i worked for renault felt very simular although it felt more like 5k+ on when you got the kick, but they was brand new so dunno how they are with a few miles on them!

A Williams should certainly be faster than a 197 in a straight line tbh. I borrowed one for the weekend, swapped cars and had a do. My 172 was faster when both setting off in 4th and the gearing is very short . Then tried the 197 against my mates Audi all road
Was even til 4th then it pulled, change to 5th, pulled a fair bit more... changed to 6th... Allroad just became a dot on the horizon lol

After going on a run with the cs boys last night I'd say a totally stnd willy would deffo get eaten up eventually by a 182/172 cup....mine is 100kgs lighter than stnd and was similar in performance to the cups/182 although admittedly they probably were'nt stnd.

A few houses down he street there's a guy that has 17 2 with full exhaust system. My Willy is slightly modded but nothing dramatic really. We have a 1km straight on which we test acceleration and my Wili and his 17 2 are practicaly equal. We test the top speed from standing start to a marker 680 meters (0.43mi) away and we both passed at 182km/h. So from my experiance, Wili would pull away at lower revs and then Sport would catch up at higher speeds. But that's 17 2. I'd say 18 2 pulls away anytime.

Also in Weinberg, Austria I was on this big eastern Europe Renault meeting and there was hill climb competition. Basically it was just a straight with no curves. There were Sports, 197, 197 R27, Williams itd... I can say that 197 and Willy had the same time, sometimes 197 was even slower than Willy. Perhaps because it has longer gearing.

so are we agreed then, my Willy being totally standard and all, that what I experienced is par for the course then??

They'd have 283bhp/tonne to beat then, that's not stripped either ;)

Chuck Norris doesn't wear condoms, there's no such thing as protection from Chuck Norris.

Did you also know that Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles were not infact mutated from radioactive waste? Chuck Norries once swallowed a turtle whole and when he crapped it out the turtle was 5 feet tall and had learned Karate.

id say so

im my valverbus (open IK, 4-2-1 mani, decat, derv gearbox) against my mates 17poo (panel filter, decat) it was very very very close up till about 4th gear in mine which is about 110mph then he pulled away
