hi all just a quick one, im fed up with screaming the nuts off the willy at a quick crozing speed going to go for more power soon but was wondering if there is a box that i can just bolt in with a longer ratio and what its from?
cheers :)

has a longer 2nd and 3rd also.

i remember bejesus' box was pulling 110+ in 3rd, whereas mine was about 95, his limit set at 6500, mine 7100.

was pants thru the gears til u got up to top end tho ;)

Someone needs to build a box with a different 5th gear ratio!

what would be the best box for a turbo engine? a long or short ratio box?

MAXIBOY
23-06-2008, 17:40
depends on the camshaft spec and the way the engine produces its power..

the speedo drive ratio is different on the disel boxs, so I wouldnt take gaug readings as accurate.

the gears are integral to the input shaft, so they cant be "mix'd and match'd" unfortunately.

Matty86
23-06-2008, 18:18
its about 2-3mph off at 70mph...

not sure what it can do in 4th. ive got no rev counter so i can't work it out and i dont fancy trying to find out on public roads! :D - my last one which seemed similar was about 140 but with a 7000 limiter

Thats not bad going, is there any way of sorting out the speedo to read right?

the derv box on my valverbus does 110 in 3rd with 7100rpm limiter and got it to 130 in 4th with a little more to go, so i recon 135 is possible

darent try top speed in 5th yet lol

it was only a 1.4 before and did 105 flat out lol

both mine have been out of clio 1.9Ds

as for the speedo, its more accurate than a valver one ime

was gunna say, the speedo reading was within 2-3 mph of the speedo reading on mine, i.e mine was reading 130, jesus' just over iirc

24-06-2008, 16:49
as 2 live says, speedo was no more or less accurate really, seemed fine to me... anyway, dont know what your on about, mine was a normal Willy box, everyone else had the wrong one in ;) lol

4th was 140mph by the way, but change to 5th and it was off cam, so needed a lot of space before it would start pulling again. Still, was good for well over 150mph on the clocks and motorway crusing at 2k and under meant consumption was awesome

24-06-2008, 17:29
fair do's, cant say ive tried one, just going on data from renault.

I tend to go the other way and find short ratio boxes

J o n
24-06-2008, 17:33
yeah short ratio boxes are much better imo, that one in the Williams needed a lot more power to make it worth while, but for top end and motorway blasts it would usually come out on top and was the only car at the time that would stick with 2 live's... mainly because his 5th was my 4th lol

MAXIBOY

willy ratio's are ideal when you up the power and torque..

valver boxes are better n/a

stan
24-06-2008, 17:45
depends what its being used for really, but they arent too bad as std. obviously for rallying, sprints/hillclimbs u want shorter...but not really practical for all circuits.

mine is just a personal preference of revs - i find i'm forever between gears in town in my valver but not with the diesel box - good on the motorway trips too :)

Thats what im after, thats the sort of gearing my fiesta rs has with an escort rs box in it, apart from the fiesta is about to have 150 more horses and 200 more foot lbs of torque    gearbox is uprated but i dont know how long its going to last

my old ford mates always used to swear by the diesel boxes tbh. cant remember if they were off the 1800 or 1600s tho

Zek
25-06-2008, 18:42
The escroat box in the rs has a unque final drive with the lsd good cruzing speed and topend,
the long box in the rover 220 turbo is even longer and dose about 170+ when you hit the limiter  need quite big power tho

so is there anything in between the willy box and the 1.9D box?

yeah, diesel box has longer 4th and 5th ratios irrc, only bolt on replacement thats lke for like swap iirc

Not the only one...

You can get a laguna JC5 S15 gearbox, longer ratios, 70mph = 3000rpm, 60mph = 2500rpm, etc.

It's not *exactly* the same as a valver box, only the top bolt holes line up and you need a MK2 top mount to run it, but i'm running one on my valver and love it 8)

What's it like through the gears? :)

cliokiz

Pretty good to be honest!

First, second and third have pretty good pull TBH, although i'm running a dog slow F7P engine so it's not going to be that quick.

Fourth and fifth gears are definately longer but great for a lot of motorway driving which i do regularly (and as the car is stripped with a mongoose, the lower revs are appreciated!)

It's been a long time since i drove an F7P with a JB3 box but i don't think you really notice it too much.

Depends what you want from the car i suppose!

anyone know the box number for a 19d box eg jb3 or somthing like that?

richy
26-02-2009, 18:32
you can change the 5th gear ratios on the jb/jc gearboxs as both gears are removable(need to be removed to strip the gearbox)

no idea on how big a difference the speeds would be, depends what sets you can find and the final ratio of 5th gear and final drive,

iirc reichhard motorsport sell both shorter and longer ratio 5th gear sets, but talking about £250

cheers fella but to be honest im after the strait swap option as my box has just started to get a slight wine  when coastin or under load, gets more and more with the cars speed rather than when you change gear.
