oil cooler for the pas?

robi1000

Yeah, I've read somewhere it was oil cooler for the PAS, but can't imagine why would you need one? I'd understand if one would want to cool brake oil or sth like that. But why PAS?

id recon pas cooler too.

pas oil gets hot! on track most 16v's and williams overflow as the pas fuild gets hot and comes out the top of the resevior.

Yes. Best option is to use a home-made catch tank. You could plumb in a PAS cooler from the R19 though.

Gearbox oil cooler

Are you shure? It's definitely more logical than PAS cooler. Especially because I don't believe MAXI did more then 15km per stage at all. And that would be a lot. I'd say more like 5km per stage and I don't believe PAS fluid gets so hot you'd have to cool it?

Of the catch tank or R19 cooler?

Cooler looks like the Maxi one but without the kinks in one side. Sits behind the rad.

When I was investigating cooling I was going to heat wrap the return pipe to the PAS reservoir as that runs very close to the exhaust manifold. In the end I just went for the catch tank.

Ha ha! If I had to bet my life on one option or another I'd always choose gearbox cooler. I know gearbox gets quite hot, but PAS. I guess I'll have to drive a trackday or two. But I can't see any logic in this. Ok, for you people that go to a track and trash your car for the whole day I can understand that it may be bad for the pump if it gets too hot. But if pump on a MAXI broke down couldn't they just replace it? Or is it too dangerous if it fails (but than again, odds for that are the same as tyre blowout)?

Yeah they could. But that's no use to the driver when he's halfway through a stage.

That's true. But then again, the same applies to the tyres... Not to mention it's easier to drive with broken PAS then with blown tyre. Well I guess it's pointless if I prove my point of view. They just made it that way and that's it.

not on a maxi as its on the cam cover and a smaller pump maybe thats why it needs a cooler...

plus they had a gearbox cooler too for the oil but i believe this was water rather than air cooled

I might have to get something like that

the maxi exhaust runs over the rack like the 172 does, passing very close to the pipes!

on track yesterday i felt a change in the steering that I didnt like - the coupled with me snapping my dogbone mount bolt is why i retired before i broke something major! :D

how come u got trailed again n all matt lad on way home? got back okay i presume!!

pas cooler is there as a sensible upgrade, rally is hard on the steering, we've all seen incar vids of ragnotti, how much/quickly does he move the wheel? no suprise it heats quickly imo and to be safe rather than sorry its best to run a cooler. tyres are totally different, you cant run solid rubber ones for instance to stop blowouts, its not practical, but a little cooler on the pas is easy to add, no loss except maybe a tiny bit of weight and the benefits for making sure the pas works all the time far outweight that, so hence it was added

sent you a text earlier mate :D - but see here for why:

on the plus side, my average fuel economy for the FCS trip was epic! :D - only used half a tank ;)

I didn't find anything in Mechanical/clio manuals. Are they somewhere else? I really want to have these because I'm rebuilding my car now and could use some ideas. :) If you've got anything on your PC please email them to me. I sent you my address the other day.

Cheers
