mine was the same while i was using semi-senthetic oil so i changed the oil to normal 15w 40 oil and it stoped the noise,

I would have said swap to 5w40 as it's a bit thinner on start up and should circulate quicker :)

Sorry to hijack but what about 0W40?

or will this be too thin?

Tappets, probably nothing to worry about though. Do a oil and filter change, will take a bit of time to recirculate the new oil so will sound just as bad for a bit but should quieten down once given a good drive about.

Oil type makes a difference too, loads of topics about this all over WC.

Might just be that the tappets are shot, try 5W40 oil and if that fails only £50 for a set off ebay, been running ebay ones for about 2 years now with no probs

noisy valve lifters possibly - I got some Wynns stuff that seemed to fix the noise on mine...
