The rev dial doesn't seem to work. Occassionally you get some movement out of it but usually nothing. Has anyone got any ideas where to start?

I've noticed one of the bulbs has gone but didn't think this should affect it.

Also how do you disconnect the speedo cable? Sure it must be simple buy my god it doesn't seem it...!

Most probably the actual counter is at fault, it's a common problem.
Just swap it for a different one.
The speedo cable needs to be squeezed from the sides to release it from the dials, do this last after all the other plugs are off and you will have a bit more room.

may be a faulty transistor on PCB behind rev counter, its a BC639, you can get them from maplins! remove old one and solder new one in taking note which way round it is! Check out the guide section and scroll down to the bottom of the page for more info.
