anybody know anything more about vehicle exports?

£1000 to ship.
£400 to get oz custom clearance
£90 shipping insurance (3% of vehicle cost)
and
17%VAT of the vehicle value
£510

looks like it would cost me £10k to get a classic car (in a good state) in australia and the wife says that i can take the willy if its cost effective.

would you do it? (moving nov 09 to adelaide)

cheers

I dunno but if it were mine i'd sell it over here and be shut - what's the car worth to you? Believe me they're in to their cars over there and you won't be pushed for choices of replacements either

Sorry if I'm missing something & being thick, but don't all your exporting figures add upto £2k & not £10k??

It really depends on how much you love the car, TBH. First things I'd ask myself, though, are:-

Was the Williams ever sold in Oz & if not, how easy/expensive is it to get spare parts down there! Also, are there any specialists there?

it would cost at least 10k if i chose not to take the williams.

nearly all of the classic cars are from europe over there. all enthusiasts import parts.

afaik there are no williams in oz. there are many car mechanics who specialise in the "rarer" breeds.

besides, it costs a small fortune to send parts in the uk, the cost for shipping to oz isnt much greater, you just have to wait 38 days.

The mk1 clios were never distributed in Oz, so there won't be anything that the Williams can use. There's a few Clio 172s running around in Sydney, so that's about the closest specialist you will get to mending a Williams. I think there was 1 RHD Williams sighted by a friend in North Sydney couple of years ago but could by been a valver.

^^lol!!!
did you know Matt has a back garden in every country around the world??
Tis a known fact!

I'd take a couple sets of brakes, couple of clutches, engine service parts ( a few of each), drive shafts, engine mounts, cambelts kits, water pumps.

anything else we can ship over to you 8)

Ah sorry, I misread your post.......... I see what you mean, now!

Maybe take:-

- G'box/clutch (& cable)/flywheel
- Radiator & pipes/Head gasket
- Road springs/shocks
- Calipers, discs, (pads x 2 sets), brake lines
- Rear arch panels (they're hard enough to get here, aren't they??!! (Although, it should be a bit dryer down under, LOL).
- Decals
- Driveshafts

Some of those things are quite heavy, but I'd imagine shoving them in the boot when you ship will be more cost effective than carriage 'as & when'.

I don't the Williams that well, ATM (I had a 16v about 7 yrs a go), but I'm sure some more established members will be along with some more/better ideas. :)

ps What's that 'De-bug' thing? I've just had to type this out again!! :( I'm sure my list looks smaller, now!

If you can afford to do it and your car is in A1 condition then I would say yes. It might also be worth finding out about insurance costs over there if you were to import it into the country.

list of things to do before i go (if i take her).

rear drivers arch just starting to show signs.
remove dimma fuel cap and replace with original (+fuel filler neck).
refurb wheels

ive only had her 30 months. ive done

clutch, gearbox, pas pump, catback mongoose, 225s and porting, new discs, new alarm, new stereo, new inner arch liners, 4 pots, passenger side done inc arch. new doors, new tailgate, bumper and bonnet repsray.

im thinking that with the lack of salt on the roads and minimial access to rainwater that the old girl will keep relatively rust free.

can this be turned into a poll? £2000 to export. would you do it?

cheers

i'd do it... car prices are much more expensive over there iirc... my mate took his 205gti over and races/rally's it over there... don't think he has a problem getting parts etc for it.

Heavier items that tend fail, or wear and tear items. My own list would be (in this order):
Clutch
Brake pads/discs
Driveshafts
Suspension items
Engine/gearbox mountings
Rubber Hoses
Radiator fan
Radiator
Steering shaft
Gearbox (depends on your driving style)

The rest of the smaller items you can airmail from UK. Also stock up on exposed rubber bits as the desert sun tend to kill them quite fast.

if there arent any over there then you can be pretty confident of selling it for a big premium over there, especially if cars are more expensive over there anyway.

its a lot to fork out but if i could afford it i would for the rarity, and the fact you might even get your shipping costs back come sale-time :D

I second that.

Don't see the point just for a clio.
