Right, this is slightly off topic from reno related stuff but i'm having difficulty find the info i need elsewhere so will appreciate some help.

Basically...i bought a new car a few months ago (ford) and its due some new tyres. I'm wanting to fit a wider profile on the wheels and i'm wondering if there is a 'safe' tyre width to wheel width ratio?

The car has 205/55 as standard - i either want to fit 215/55 or 225/50 to the (i think) 7J wheel.

Will this be ok to do or will these be too much for the wheel leading to rubbish handling or worse?

:?

195 50 will be best i would suggest, the others will be too sloppy.

Thats smaller than standard - i don't want it to look like its running bike tyres! lol

I can't see 215s being a problem - it's the same step up as 185 to 195s is :)

Aye, i think it may end up being those at the end of the day.

225 wdith is what the ST220s run but then again those wheels are 7.5J wide...on my 7J it'll probably only add to the wallowing under braking...

215 would be max i would go mate, 7j is 7 inches which is only 17.8cm, so any wider than 21.5cm and its gonna start to adversly affect the handling, i only ever run 195 tyres on both 7 and 6.5j tyres and they are okay so on that 205 on the 7j would be max i'd go but u may get away with 215 as an absolute max

stick to 205's but go lower profile, tyre will seem wider to the eye

Once you've had F1s I don't think you'd want to go back, especially once you've driven in the wet 8)

And don't skimp on rubber - it's the only thing holding you on the road!

just because you like them dont make them good  :P

Thats exactly why they're the best

I had two sets of F1's and I just couldn't get into them I can really say why but the thing I do remember is that I thought they were rubbish in the wet - maybe I should stop attacking them and move forward

Anyway new ones : http://www.williamsclio.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?p=307414#307414

Are they any good then?

I'm not necessarily one for looks and labels over performance ;) :P

They work as well in the rain as they do in the dry - much better progression in the wet.

I haven't really leant on them hard yet as I wanted to get rid of the initial covering rubber but I intend of using this weather to good effect. also I have to remember these are 185's so they feel different already.
