View Full Version : Idle Problem

Looks like the Clio that I've just bought is suffering from an idle problem when warm.
When slowing down for junctions/traffic, the engine sometimes stalls. But this only happens when the car is fully warmed up.
I've cleaned the iscv and throttle body and the problem still persists.
Any ideas?

off topic, but whereabouts u from matey?
Do a search mate, this has been discussed many times and could be a number of things so best to try them all until the problem is rectified. A new cat seemed to sort my idle issues a few years ago

don't let Rob touch it mate it'll never work again, lol
could be a broken gasket or a split pipe going into the inlet manifold from the rocker or just a bad fitment on a pipe but if u ask me sounds like an earth fault

cheeky sod, i was just asking where the guy lived (with the name northerner, i thought he might live near us) gheyboy.
could be coolant temp sensor giving wrong reading when hot, but unlikely
how does the car run when hot apart from the idle issue

The car runs fine, apart from the idle issue.
It appears more prevalent when i'm slowing down from speed...

LAMBDA SENSOR
Wouldnt the Lambda sensor affect the idle during cold starts/running?

My experience of dealing with problem lambda sensors was always when the engine had got to temperature.
I never had any problems when it was cold.
The idle dips and dips to around 200-300 and eventually stalls.
my lambda problems were the opposite, only cold running problems

How much does a new Lambda sensor cost and where do you get one from?
about £50 from a factors, get a direct fit one, NOT a universal one
my preference is for an NGK one over a Bosch, they last longer

Have changed the Lambda sensor and no change.
Any ideas?
does it only do it when warm...

Yeah, only when its fully warmed up.
could try a coolant temp sensor as suggested above..
have you looked for air leaks..

Yeah, all the pipework, etc looks in good order.
I'll try a coolant sensor next...
looks more likely to be the coolant temp sensor then
if its nakered it keeps the ecu on the cold running map so it runs richer

coolant temp sensor doesn't sound like the culprit here, but its worth a try... i would get the isvc off again and give that a clean, my experience with coolant temp sensor is opposite, it gives shite idle when cold as it can't detect the temp.. then clears up when warm as the lambda will kick in and take over the fueling etc...
So for me it could be the iscv, tps (throttle position sensor) or maybe as suggested a dodgey lambda heating coil. i think its the iscv is either knackered or sticking.

I doubt its the Lambda as I have replaced this with a new one.
TPS - If this was faulty, wouldn't it create issues independant of the engine temp?
ISCV - I've cleaned this but the problem remains. Is there a way to test it? Also, how much does a new one cost?

Also, would any fault codes be captured by the ecu?
not sure mate...think they used to use an rx25 but not sure what it was capable of

i guess you could borrow one from a friend or buy one from a scrappy? not sure on new price, but i don't think they are cheap

Its booked into a Renault specialists tomorrow to be hooked up to the Renault diagnostic machine.
I'll post up the outcome...

Sorry for the delay in posting an update, but I've been fixing my track prepped R5GTTand subjected to repeated decorating jobs set by the wife.
Anyway, the diagnostic check didn't pick up anything and I was duly advised to change the ISCV which hasn't made any difference.
When the car is fully warmed up and the issue becomes prevalent, the throttle becomes like a switch and is unable to be initially modulated.
I'm starting to think that the TPS may be the culprit - Any ideas?
Also, how much would a new TPS cost?

Brake master cylinder thingy? Leaking vaccum possibly...
