Im stumped as what to get next. The Williams is ok, drives well and is looking clean and tidy but im after something newer but still has the fun element.

As the mrs will use it daily for work ideally its got to do over 30mpg, so anything like a Evo is a no go.

Got a about 5k to spend i reckon, maybe 6k at the very most and newer than a 1994 Williams.

What do we think?

GTI-6

Fun cars to drive. Dare i say it prob a better drive than my williams was.

I drove my mates for quite a bit when he broke his leg and i loved it.

yeah thought about one of those too, but for a decent one you could get a good low mileage 172.

Pug is on the list tho 8)

My mates selling his now. Had lots of work done.

Throttle bodies, coliovers, full respray 3 months ago, w plate. 235bhp, moonstone blue.

Wont quite do 30mpg, closer to 20 lol but what fun.

Haha, yeah bit of a beast. Not quite practical. If it were me using it day to day i might have considered it.

172 sounds good, or a 6.

Both very nice cars.

Do people let their missus drive their willys.... :o I won't even let her sit in the driving seat...lol

Personally I'd go for a Trophy, one of the best hot hatches imo

id be tempted with a 172, you can pick up a low miler ph1 172 for about that, my 182 averages 32/33mpg on back road/stop-start driving and can easy do 38mpg+ on motorway highest ive actually seen was 45mpg lol

a 306 gt-6 would be good too although pos still abit old, unsure on year they stopped making them tbh!

For 5k you can pick up a very nice ph2 172 with low miles. All the GTI-6's tend to have done more than 100k. Bit of a pointless move when the Williams has only done 80k.

Renaults seem to offer best value for money, who said depreciation is bad. :P

hehe, i think a 172 phase 2 is a good bet imo

For 5k you can get low mileage end of line phase 3 gti-6, something different to a mk2 clio abd more old skool.

If I was going mk2 I'd get a low mileage 172 cup

5 grand is the start of scooby money if you were thinking of something bigger.

How many doors does it need? and are you looking for willy pace or something quicker?

volvo 850 t5-r. I know they're fwd, but its quick and practical (pretty irrelavent in my eyes) and you can get them well under 5 k and they're bit that old either. Plus spend some cash and you can go Evo bashing (well on straight roads) 8)

A mate had one of these (Manual). Mid-Range Torque BEAST!

As per Richy's comment: 172 Ph1 is a good bet imo.

Can pick up good ones for £3000-£4000.
Leaving £1k for basic mods (Mine produced 177 BHP at HP with only an ITG filter and KTec Stealth Exhaust - they apparently respond very well to modified inlet manifolds also £150-200 for 7-12bhp gains)

Will do 38MPG on a long run at 70mph+ a abit  . Hits 40mpg doing 50-60mph in 5th. Can get 32mpg in London rush hour traffic as well, if you dont participate in Traffic Light GP's

Feels like a Grand Tourer (IMO) in comparison to a Williams, easy and comfortable for day to day driving. Although, when the need arises, drop a couple of cogs and enjoy.

I test drove 306 GTI-6 before i bought my williams. It was quick and nice to drive but it felt like it would fall apart any minute, lol. But the interior was much nicer i must admit.

logical progression as said is the cliosports, spec and age to your own taste and budget but all decent, lively little cars

shame they just dont look as good or have the rawness of the mk1, but i spose thats kinda the point for you

Yeah my mate had a 400bhp Volvo, shocking around the corners and couldnt get the power down until 4th in the dry. Pretty pointless with that much power and it eats fuel.

A nice new GTI-6 would be good, but i cant get over the fact that seems a lot of money for a ph2 306

Its looking likely to be a 172 tbh, just wandered if anybody else had any other thoughts

Yup, 100% agree. My mate has one and if I was spending that sort of money I'm pretty much certain I would but a DC2.

If you did go down that route though go for a JDM model rather than a UK one imo.

Mk IV Golf GT TDi - the early ones should be down around your budget now... 50+mpg plus lots of opportunity for chipping upgrades...

Thought about one of those a few months ago, but for that sort of money you get this sort of shit

http://www.pistonheads.co.uk/sales/437334.htm

Which im not too interested in. Just want to jump in a drive, not piss about getting panels painted and seats re-trimmed etc

If you wanna save some of the money you have and get a car that is loads of fun, how about a Fiat Coupe 20V Turbo.

0-60 in about 5.5 secs, cheap insurance too.

Thats my 2 cents.

fiat coupe 20v turbo is a good shout, get an owners club one that has had its manifold rewelded, the cambelt done and good history and you will have loads of fun! quick, tunable and pretty cost effective if you do your research.
