Dont like halfords tools mate, the chrome finish they put on their stuff is not too good IMO, seemed to come of way too easy on my halfords pro spanner set.

Have to say my tendancies are leaning towards snap-on tools.

I've got a 1/2" drive draper one, goes form about 30Nm to about 210, does everythign i've wnated it to do,and is about 500/600 mm long, only thing i couldn't do wiht it was the front hub bolts, they had to be 250Nm, bt just tightened to 210 and then a bit futher wiht breaker bar

To be fair if you have a good look at halfords professional stuff there pretty well made! And have a lifetime guarantee....

I snapped a 4 year old torque wrench trying to undo a stubborn drive shaft nut and got a brand new one for nowt!! :D

Snap-on etc are top notch tools but the price dont justify the mean! We use a lot of cromwell (www.cromwell.co.uk) stuff at work and its way more durable than a lot of stuff you find from cheapo spots like machine mart etc...

Nearly all my tools are Halfords professional gear and get a right pounding every day. My socket set must be 6-7 years old now and not had a single problem with any of it. Finish is still perfect on all the spanners and everything.

if its just for wheel bolts and non critical components, jsut get a cheap clicker type.

But if its for anything of importance, and you dont want to spend a fortune, dont get a clicker. Springs are inaccurate, weaken over time, leave them done up over night and its almost scrap (if its a cheap one).

Buy a good beam type torque wrench, totally reliable.

If you got a funds, a dial type.

Slithers, got mine from Machine Mart in Alty. I think it's the Clarke type that Northy mentioned. Good price as well. Comes with 1/2" drive and a 1/4" converter IIRC.

lol.. For anything above 150nm you'll need to stick your tongue out.

My Halfords pro socket set is still going strong. I had a dinky little ratchet fail on me and they replaced FOC!!

My halfords socket set has gone rusty. Will I be able to change it without the receipt?

All the bits have gone FUBAR.

Maybe. Depends on the model I guess. Mine had a lifetime guarantee.

Good point that, if you do have a decent clicker type torque wrench NEVER leave it wound up or it will lose its calibration...

Dial ones are the dogs but will leave you with a mortage to pay for! lol

Right had a look at the halfords pro 60-200Nm Torque Wrench for £49.99

Have to say im quite impressed, looks like a decent bit of kit.

Will weigh it up against the TENG TTX1292 wrench i was lookin at.

http://www.a-pp.com/shop/teng_wrenches.htm

Both the same price around Halfords is 49.99 Teng is 53.00, the halfords one has an easy to read adjustment dial though

What do you use jonnybegood, or recommend out of these two?

Facom are part of britool i belive , britool are also a good make to consider, similar guarantees to snap on these days

So i guess the fact that my torque wrench has never been unwound means its fubared?

BenR
18-06-2005, 22:56
if its a clicker, its not going to help.
The spring inside sets the torque 'click', if its left wound then it stretches.

katbloke

yep always recommended that you unwind a toque wrench after use but thats where a quality item such as snap on or britool come in handy because of the lifetime guarantee
