Car runs but idles very high. Opened ECU today and found this:

You can see scorch marks on the cover there, and one of the circuits has quite badly blown on the motherboard. Seen this before??

cant really make anything out from those pics tbh.

are you sure you havnt just got an airleak?

This may highlight it a bit:

My phone camera is shit, sorry.

I have checked and used jubilee clips on any of the pipework that may be leaking. One nut on the inlet manifold is not done up, as it's so hard to get too, but undoing other nuts has made no difference and the otehrs are all on tight.

I can hear no air sounds at all when i start the car, other than ISCV. When ISCV is blocked is instantly stalls, at mo it is idling at 2.4k revs. It should idle at 900/1000 rpm which is a heck of an air leak if it is one.

Cleaned ISCV 3 times thoroughly.

Checked sensors.

Car has been exposed to elements for some time and we have had some very wet weather, ECU could have gotten wet, and blown.

will probably cost near enough the same getting it
soldered etc and still will leave you in doubt whether the
actual board has any other damage .

i would scrap that and get a working ecu .

^^^ Agree with the Jackal.
Could always take Matteh up on his offer too.

I am used to dealing with blown parts on my PC and I've seen this sort of thing before. I'm just gonna get another complete one. I think the capacitor is ok, but theres another bit which has split open and molten metal seems to have seepeed through the crack.

One concern is if something else has caused it to blow up...

stan

most likely moisture has caused it to trace accross part of the board.

Yea, thats what I reckon. Hopefully, a change of motherboard will sort it once and for all!

It's got me to thinking though...is it worth sealing up the ECU box with Silicone or a bag after removing as much moisture as possible first? It just seems like it isn't waterproof the way it is now.

Most probably it's the multi-leg component that is attached to the heatsink. Scorch marks on cover appears to be over the heatsink (which might be normal), but is there actual damage on the component itself? Can't see anything, take a better picture and post it up here. Get yourself a freeze spray to test on that spot, some times overheating can cause these components to hang.

Sorry, my mobile is not very good at closeup pictures :(

The scorch marks are not just from high temperature over time, they are as if ther has been a sudden flame, much like if you hold your hand over a candle thats a bit smokey if you see what i mean?

You can see there, just, one of the pins is darker than the others and around there the plastic has melted as has some of the metal inside one of the plastic cover things. It's overheated and gone bang.

It's all academic now, as I will be replacing it anyway!
