View Full Version : Front Wheel Bearing

Went to get my new wheels fitted today at ATS Euromaster and when the car was off the ground he noticed that there was quite a bit of play in the OS Front wheel and said that the bearing had gone! Does this sound right...I thought you normally get a whining noise like when the rears went on mine? I take it its a hub off job etc....what exacly is involded?

Get it on an axle stand, remove wheel and pull the hub. If it moves alot (wobbles) then they are shot.

Ok mate...cheers...he only did it with the wheel on...did'nt really want him to change the bearing just incase he was trying to pull a fast one!

thats not really how you do it...^^ you need to leave the wheel on!

get it on stands, grab the wheel, one hand at 12'o'clock, one at 6'o'clock, and rock back and forth, feeling for free-play.

they dont always make a noise when driving.

conversely, sometimes they can make a noise, and show no play!

I'd take the hub to a willing machine shop and get them to press the new bearing in.

when bearings are worn its usally a humming kinda noise .
stans diagnosis is spot on.

Yep....jacked the wheel up earlier...theres definately a lot of play in the wheel when you holf you hands at 12 and 6 oclock....also where ever you try to wobble it from it moves....if the ball joint was to off gone....what kind of movement would u get?

a wheel bearing will wobble in most directions, best way to check ball joint is to put full right hand lock on (for o/s) and hold the wheel at 9 and 3 while someone watchs the ball joint, shake side it side and you will see it move about if its worn

aye it will show play in all directions, but if u hold it at the top and bottom of the wheel, it stops confusing it with steering related play.

Just getting a few quotes from various companies...one of them said that there too different size bearings -
72mm Bearing
65mm Bearing

Can anyone tell me which one it is for the Willy 2?

Is it a good idea to do these on both sides when being replaced? Does only changing one cause a possible imbalance?

not really...brakes should be done as set and shocks and springs. bearings are ok as singles

Yes, not bad at all! I think I may get two and do them when I redo my suspension system for Part IV of my project thread...

How hard are they to fit? Do I need a special press thingy?

I bought the same ones about a week ago... tried myself to fit but vice not up to the job. Wipped the hub off and took it to a local engineering shop. they pressed them in for a fiver!!

No wobble now :)

Yeah....definately need to pressed in...need about a ton of force from memory..lol. Rears are pressed into the disk and fronts into the hub so both have to be removed for fitting and refitting.

a ton :S i have had to put 20 ton on bearings before lol
all depends on how stuck they are lol :D
If you do them yourself you might end up with the outer race on the bearing getting stuck on the stub axel, right pain to get off if you dont have the tools, so beat to get a place to do it for a few quid :D

Have probably done 20+ fronts on clios now.

And my dimma eats bearings like no bodies business :S

After all of this I finally got a chance to take a look at my car tonight....turns out it was only the hub nut that was loose! :shock: I really hope that ATS Euromaster still wouldnt have gona ahead and changed the bearing! :roll: This only proves that u can only trust urself when it come to working on ur car!
