Hello, i am new to the world of clios and have the opertunity to by a 1.8 williams for buttons, the gearbox has gone but the rest of the car is mint.

I am going to replace the gearbox myself, i am very confident i can do this as i have changed many engines and clutches in the past.

Which gear boxes are compatible? could i fit a gear box from a different engine type? like a 1.2 or 1.4?
i have read about 18poo and 17poo gearboxes but this means nothing to me.
Will any clio mk1 gear box fit? i am not to bothered about the ratios, i am just after a resonably priced gearbox.

Should i be bothered about the ratios? :?

Any advice will be much appreciated, does any one have a gear box for sale and how much should i pay. :)

Cheers very much Gav

Most of the JB3's will fit but its all about the gear ratios, also the Williams was a 2L the clio 1.8 is the clio 16v, so a different car, so you don't get ripped off

172/182 Gearboxes do fit IIRC, you have to use a different top mount or use the Renault 19 front gearbox mount instead as the mountings are slightly different.

Standard williams boxes are JC5, 1.8 16v gearboxes are JB3. They are interchangeable, so a 1.8 16v JB3 box would work on a williams and a williams JC5 box would work on a 1.8 16v.

JC5 S15 laguna boxes also fit (i'm using one on my new build)

Some JB1 boxes fit (from 1.2/1.4 engined MK1 clios), however the boxes from the 1.2 Ph3 DO NOT fit, as they are slightly different. I have one in my garage.

Basically check where the starter motor sits. I think on the Ph3 clios the starter is at the front of the block which is why the box i have doesn't fit.

I could be wrong on any of the above so feel free to correct me, but that's all i know.

Good post ^^ :)

And, as above, williams was 2.0, not 1.8 like the 16v was. Might be an idea to check the engine number on the front of the block, near the oil filter (I think?). If it's F7P it's a 1.8, if it's F7R it's a 2.0 :)

Yes the ID tag is to the right of the oil filter near where the gearbox meets the block.
