Bear in mind, you need an MSA licence, which I think for racing you need to go on an ARDS test, also the car will have to comply with the MSA regulations ,which includes the fireproof overalls and an approved helmet.~~ that said it is the cheapest formula to race in

plus entry fees per event.

We already have some racers on here with track cars. Pick the best one, get a team of mechs etc that willing to enjoy doing it and you will work out pretty cheap. (Don't forget fuel and tyre costs though).

Fancy being a sponsor stan :D

I'd be up for some sort of motorsport team, but I think logistically it would be too difficult.

I have been looking... i will read again, mite be fun.. some highly tuned 1.6's and compete in the stock class... see if they allow engine swaps... put a mk2 1.6 16v engine in a valver.

Mite be fun!

My old friend i used to sail with used to race in formula renault is now a race driving instructor.

The licence costs approx £1000 to get and he said thats if you do a week intensive course.

^^A go racing pack from the MSA is £50. I did a course to get my licence at Brands hatch and it cost me £270 (for one day). Then on top of that you need to pay for a medical. Then you need to pay for your actual licence, about £50. So to get your licence isn't too expensive. It's all the safety equipment you need which really costs!!

Would cost you 14k a year. plus if you want to be up there at the front you gotta spend ££££

good laugh but not cheep. there are blokes that do it spending £50k+.

Number 1 ~~~ Sprint & Hillclimbing ~~ is probably the cheapest "Speed" sport there is, £32 ( I think) for an MSA licence NO ARDS tests etc,£12 if you join our club    .For the technical stuff ~~ a Timing strut, ignition marked on/off,an Approved MSA helmet and a pair of Fire/flame proof overalls,I reckon all in about tops £250  .Then entries at about £60 an event ~~ In the Northwest, there events at Scammonden Dam ( We run one in August),3 Sisters Kart Circuit ~~ Wigan,Aintree race circuit,Harewood Hillclimb ~ Leeds,Barbon ~~ Kirkby Lonsdale.
Go on have a go   ~~ You know it makes sense

Yeh im gonna have to get on with it, just for a bit of fun, going to cost loads to get competetive mind, theres a chap local to me who was british sprint and hillclimb champion in his day, i might have to go speak to him

going to cost loads to get competetive mind

They have a standard production class for unmodified cars up to 2000cc. An off-the-shelf valver or Williams would be plenty capable of winning that class with no outlay other than consumables. A set of road tyres should easily last you a year's worth of events, so it's really just the entry fees and cost of fuel to get there that you really need to budget for.

Coops :~
From the MSA 2008 Year book ~~ From which all Motorsport is ruled   I 68 & 70 " catergories and classes are free but must be stated in the SR's(Supplementary Regulations) .The folowing are recommended and where used must comply with I 70~ 81"
I 70 ~~
Road Going Production Cars ~~ Saloons and Sports Cars produced in quantities of no less than 1000 per annum.

Road Going Specialist Production Cars. ~ Cars with a minimum annual production of 20 chassis, which do not qualify as "Road Going Production Cars"

In my experience as a Licensed Clerk of Course   .If there was a couple of cars in in the specialist class,I would be tempted to amalgamate them into the Production Class,

The regulations stipulate a lot more criteria to be met ,regarding engines/gear trains etc etc ~~ All have to run Class 1 tyres.

Our club and several more in the NorthWest, stipulate the car must be driven to the Circuit ~~ ie ensure it is 100% Road legal ~~ only for the Standard Car Classes.

As Rod says, the actual determination of classes at an event that you would compete within is 'free'. I know when I have done hillclimbs down in the South West (Wiscombe, etc.) they seem to favour a structure that has an engine capacity up to 1800cc (which would nicely accommodate a valver!) whereas in my more usual South East locations a class up to 2000 cc is the norm. An example of regs for a particular event can be found here:

http://www.borough19motorclub.co.uk/regs_sprint_080316.doc

Page 3 explains the limited modifications that would be permissable for a vehicle to run in the 'standard production' class A0 at that event.

Oh, and if you are serious about entering the application forms for your licence can be found here:

http://www.msauk.org/uploadedfiles/msa_forms/Initial_Application_Form.pdf

In Section 4 Step 2 'Speed Non-race National B' is the licence you need to apply for if you just intend to compete in sprints and hillclimbs. No test necessary, just hand over £36.

This is something I've been wanting to do for a while, just haven't had the dosh since buying a house last year...

Good info there stevie_b / rod, definitely worth doing if you want to get involved in cheap competetive motorsport. The original owner of my williams did hill climbing and sprinting for years and was very successful with only a few modifcations (LSD, cams and suspension tweeks) I'm sure many of the tuned hybrid beasts on here would be quicker around a course than mine!!

If there are enough people up for it you can even create your own championship and class  So the Regs would have a section 'Renault Clio Speed Championship' on them to tick - could then do an annual championship or whatever based on best 4 out of 6 rounds or however you want to do it. Would be fun! I think you'd need to be generating about 5-10 entries per event though for the organising clubs to create a class for you. I can look into it if we really think there are 5-10 members that would regularly compete?

That sounds like a great idea mate, I think it'd be a struggle to get 5-10 members tho. May be an idea to have a WC sprint day first to give people a feel for what it's all about, remember someone on here organised one a couple of years back and it looked like a good laugh...
