my friend has just called to say his engine is making a very nasty sound when he turns the wheel.

so i say the power steering pump is prob nackered. the sound is like the a bag of nails being rattled. i made the assumtion of the bearings being nackered. could lack of fluid cause this or are they sealed bearings?

also he has just told me he has a split power steering pipe and a fluid leak. however the rattling/bearing sound was before the fluid had pissed out?

First thing to do is check the fluid level, if it gets low you can hear the pump from a mile away its that bad.

well it dumped it oil out of the lower pipe round by the gearbox. it was rubbing on the drive shaft!

will the pump get damaged by not having power steering fluid

Can't you unplug the pump until it gets fixed? Not sure if you can..

Imagine the pump will burn out if no fluid is in it.

Don't run car without fluid.. it is not designed for that. You will screw something up.

Fix the leak, then fill up to the appropriate level. My horrible noises dissapeared when adding only a little extra fluid to the pot when I thought it was already full.
