Are they the same size?

Nope all different sizes, even ones on bloack are different sizes, when i tried sourcing mine i found only place i could get the right size for the one i wanted to replace was Renault

Damn it.

The 16v lump i've got was apparently leaking coolant from a core plug into the spark plug well. I went into reno half asleep and mistakenly ordered the ones for the block so it looks like they'll no use now :(

The lad behind the desk didn't say anything about sizes - i guess he should have?

Prettu sure tehre aren't any core plugs in the spark plug well, no way to access them

Thats what i thought, as i had a good look last night too but check the description of the problem here - http://www.williamsclio.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?t=26902

I'll maybe send Hulio a quick PM to confirm as maybe theres been a mixup?

Right, Hillpower said it was leaking coolant in the spark plug wells from somewhere altho it hasn't been run for years so i can't tell and Hulio can't remember now so i don't know.

I'm inclined just to leave it, bung it in and get it going.

If there is coolant getting into the wells where could it be coming from?

Only thing i can think of is cracked head, leaking into the spark plug wells, either that or its just water thats been spilt on the engine?

I'll check it over tonight altho i can't see it being cracked.

May possibly be water spilt. When i took the plugs out to pour oil down the bores there was a bit of mayonaise round one or two but nothing major...think i'll risk it.

Why would you wanna pour oil down the spark plug holes :?

lube the bores for storage? compression test?

ss betwee:(

Yep there is...had a look a few minutes ago and managed to find them in dialogies;

They're about 15mm each going downwards.

Next question...is this a head off job or can they be done in situ?

This engine is to go in my RT but altho i'm willing to do that i'd rather not have to deal with anything as critical as the headgasket iof i can...

:?

done in situ...not easy but doable as i did mine...changed every one when i rebuilt it..

Ah, thats something i suppose.

Can you give me a quick rundown on how to do it as i'm fairly sure haynes won't be of help?

:)

depends on what you have to hand

i tend to drill a little hole in the plug and screw in a self tapper and use this to lever the plug up and out

then you a little gasket sealer and the right sized socket that just fit inside the plug and an extension bar in this case and tap the plug in slowly and make sure it stays level. then keep going until its level

I'll give it a go.

Cheers!

Yep when i replaced a core plug i just used a large socket and some gasket sealant and tapped it in :)

I did mine by using a centre punch to dish the centre in, and then a punch on one side to spin it around and retrieve with a pair of pliers

Right, bit of a downer today.

Drove in and picked up the 2 plugs and came home to start work. Hammered a small hole into the first and then put self tapper in...wouldn't budge! Then hammered the hole a bit bigger in the hope i could twist it out but still no luck depsite practically mashing the damn thing.

So the head is going to have to come off. :(

To make things more annoying i can't get on with it until i get an engine stand as the lump is full of oil. Suppose i could take it off (as it hasn't been run in years so the oil will all be at the BE) but i'm getting a cambelt kit so will need the stand anyway to do a proper job.

What an arse this has turned out to be...beginning to think i should have just sold the RT and bought a 16vrather than going to this conversion route....too late now i guess becuase ive got all this stuff.

On a plus note, this was the first day this year i've had the motorbike out. Started first time after sitting for months and ran perfectly...god bless the japs!

Try tapping the side of it, to rotate it in the hole, and then pull it out

^^^^^^ i agree but be careful not to mark the head..
