IIRC the green ones were a special edition with a hideous (IMO) leather interior, can remember what they were called though

Cheers for all the replies.

Why the interest...

Well the sunroof is leaking again on the 16v and im just getting a bit tired of all the little niggly things, not to mention the arches need doing, a few rust patches on the sills etc so am considering buying a 172 mark I and wasnt too sure on colours and im not a great lover of the silver/iceberg ones. I dont see many other colours around hence the question.

BUT, i love the driving of the 16v. Just an awesome thrill. I dont think id sell it as ive put too much of my own time and hard work into it, and would probably only get £1500 max for it, and its worth more to me than that.

I would love an f7r into the 16v but im just trying to weigh up whether i can justify the cash it will cost me and whether i would be better spending it elsewhere

On the other hand it may turn into a 2year project, what with cash etc, doing what id want to do to it, and then i think these cars are starting to look a bit dated, and 2 years down the line, even more dated, argh, can you tell im confused!!!!??

But...

On the other hand 172's are still a bit pricey imo, still 2.5k with something like 95k on the clock. On this statement i may be back to square one again!!!

Im still confused.

But then I look at my pictures of it and say to myself, surely I cant sell it!!

A mk1 for me has that ageless appeal like say a 205 does only moreso - I still think they're one of the nicest looking cars out there...

Of all the clios funny enough I reckon the mk1 172 has aged the worst - maybe its because they facelifted it but even though I like them I'd only have an exclusive personally - the rest look a bit kiddy and old!

sounds like my dilema about 10 months ago, mine was made alot simpler by the fact i had someone offerening me very good money for my valver. i purchased the 172, and have been motoring since

don't think it will be 100x better though, i never had a leaky roof in the valver but i deffo won't get one in the 172 due to the lack of the sunroof. i have had a few annoying rattles though, some still need sorting.

not sure if i have ever given the 172 a proper chance but i am still thinking about coming back to mark 1 ownership, i am sure the 172 phase 1 (although meant to be the best of that mark 2 bunch along with the cup / trophy) isn't as good as the mark 1's.

hope this may or may not have helped, any questions mate i would be happy to answer

That just has no aggresive-ness or flair to it whatsoever does it!!?

Looks like something my 54yr old step-dad would drive!!!

the 172's do look a bit nancy from most angles, in a way thats kind of a good thing as most people don't suspect the super dooper amount of power they have (sarcasm).

i agree that the mark 1's are far superior in looks, hence the reason i am thinking about my project, although there is a slight light with the 172, it looks good from the front

If its mk2 it has to be Ph2 TBH

tbh I love my Ph1 now, looks have grown on me, even though it's much softer looking than the Williams it's a better car... I hate to say it, but it's just better. Maybe not faster or better handling, as there's probably nothing between a good example in each, but they are miles more solid to drive (this includes other Williams I've driven, which total a few) and feel safer and are infinitely more reliable. Plus, out of the Mk2's it's the lightest at 1059, 40kg's of which is aircon, which the Cup doesn't have (if they do they weigh the same roughly but have horrible seats).

Given the choice of a mint williams or 172 I'd take the newer car now, things like breaking down, rust and reliability play a big part for me and the 172's cost me bugger all so far. Williams is still much more fun, a valver isn't though imo, I find the handling a bit ropey at times, again, personal preference though.

i dont think the mk1's have dated at all and still look fresh, and who wants their car to look the same as all the new ones anyway, shape and designwise new hatchbacks are quite similar, (the new corsa and clios look like the same child has designed them! )

for looks the mk1 valvers and willys cant be beaten, if youve got a quick car you want it to look aggressive (oe aggressive)
but the mk2's look the same throughout the range with minor changes such as wheels.
Wheras in the williams i feel like im in a niche car collective where its something a bit special if you own one,
people say things like 'ive always wanted one of those' and had one lad get all pervy over it saying it was sexy and had a 'wide ass booty' like his wife lol

wheras if you drove a 17turd noone would bat an eyelid as there common as muck.
