I think it just becomes really heavy. Heavier than a manual by a significant amount.

Why would it be heavier than a manual? The pumps not aiding it so it'd basically just be the same feeling as a none power steering rack.

I wouldnt really run one without fluid.

because the pinion and rack setup is different on manual and vs power assisted, so you end up having to put more force to move it due tothe size diff in pinions

I ran the illiams with no pump from the word go

about the same effort as manual

As long as there is no fluid left in the rack it'll be the almost the same effort as a non pas rack, with less turns lock to lock :)

I will be doing this when the pump gives up

Nah I disagree mine was definitely more effort than a manual rack when the PAS pipe split.

as above, its alot harder than a manual rack, you can pack it full of grease which makes it about the same.

Sooooo...

Is it safe to run it without fluid in?

I gathered that it would be alright for a while but then without the lubrication needed (fnar fnar lol) it would kill the pump and rack?

grrr Stupid no edit button lol

If you disconnect the fuse for the pump (assuming it has a dedicated fuse) could you then just run it without fluid? If the pump's not on then you couldn't kill it with lack of fluid is my logic...

The pump runs of the aux belt though so will be running as long as the engine is.

Well that's my lack of knowledge shown up  lol

Fairly sure running the pump without lube will shaft it. Bare in mind most people only do it because the pump is already bust so doesn't make a difference.

Take the pump off, use a volvo alternator bracket kit, agreed when there is pas fluid in the rack it is heavy, but when you drain the rack empty, (a split hose will leave fluid in the rack) it'll be light, if manual racks dont need lubrication then there is surely no reason why a pas one with no fluid will seize up? the rack and pinion isnt lubricated by the pas fluid anyway

Go out scrappy, find summat like a reno5 gtx or basically something powered by an f3p/r without power steering, im sure these are the brackets,
No point walking into volvo for the bits they would get confused!!
